Good morning valued customers! I'm Ember, admin of transfem.social. I'm here today with a big announcement regarding the exciting new future of our platform.

Beginning today (April 1, 2024), transfem.social and the transfem.org network have partnered with Microsoft to build a new generation of content-centric social media! Our new, patented Microsoft Sharkey (TM) 11 update brings a variety of cutting-edge features to maximize engagement and expand your commercial reach.

Today's update brings you many new features, including:

  • Sponsored posts - see the latest and greatest right at the top of your home feed.
  • New recommended timeline - find the most relevant posts using AI intelligence.
  • Enhanced privacy settings - choose between "share data" and "ask again later" for all tracking and advertisements.
  • Integration with other Microsoft products - connect to Outlook (TM) and GitHub (TM) to see updates right in your notification sidebar.
  • Sign in with Microsoft - all legacy Sharkey accounts have been upgraded to a free Microsoft account.
  • XBOX Gaming support - Clicker, Bubble Game, and Mahjong have been replaced with new ad-funded versions. All existing users will receive 10 free pulls in each game!
  • Clippy sub-module - all posts are verified for correct and format English grammar. Alternate language packs can be purchased for an additional fee.
  • Enhanced search - Use Bing to instantly search the entire fediverse - including private posts! Don't know what you want? That's OK, Cortana is here to bring you Microsoft's recommended results for any search query.
  • Cloud Drive - Microsoft Sharkey's (TM) drive has been fully overhauled. All uploaded media is now backed by Microsoft OneDrive, including automated AI analysis to improve your Sharkey experience.

Of course, I can't forget the single best feature of Microsoft Sharkey (TM) 11 - a brand new re-imagined Ai-chan! In addition to a whole new look, Ai is now backed by Cortana and Copilot. Your new posting companion can help you read, write, and edit any text or media upload. All you have to do is ask - Ai is always listening for her catchphrase "hey Ai!". Say goodbye to typing, and say hello to a new generation of voice-assistant fedi!

As a part of this new era, Sharkey will transition to a source-available model. Instances of less than 100 users can obtain a free license, while larger organizations should contact sales to request a quote. This new model will alleviate funding concerns and ensure that Sharkey is financially prepared for a web 3 future.

Thank you all for your trust and patience as we move forward into a greater future. I hope you enjoy it!

⚠️ Scheduled Maintenance on April 6th

This Affects: TransFem.social, Shonk.social, ActivityPub.software, TransWo.men and other services related to TransFem.org

Due to delays in shipping the migration is not possible this weekend and has been scheduled for April 6th instead, on April 6th i will setup the servers in the Datacenter our colocation provider and start setting everything up this can take a few hours and during that time the site will still be available.
We will arrive in the Datacenter circa 12:00 CEST, but it will take a while till setup is done im assuming we would do the actual migration somewhere around 14:00 or 15:00 CEST but it may take longer so if the site goes down on April 6th during that time its because we are doing the migration.
If any further delays happen another announcement with the new date will be made.

Pls boost, thanks

Hostname Competition you get to maybe name the new TransFem.org Servers we need 6 hostnames in total, 1x Network Switch, 1x Firewall, 1x Load Balancer / Cluster Management, 2x Worker Server 1x Backup

The hostnames must be LGBTQ/TransFem or Sharkey/Instance Related

The names will be picked from the most liked replies to this post after which I'll check them and decide if they are suitable

Sharkey,

@Amelia Mozilla FireShonk or just FireShonk

With recent events, i have taken the decision to drop #cloudflare with the transition to new servers, i'll have to figure out what CDN (likely fastly ill try to apply for the foss program) to use and what DNS service to use also we'll have to move to a different S3 provider

During the transition to new servers TransFem.social, and all other TransFem.org services including the Sharkey repo's may experience a down time of up to 48 hours due to DNS nameserver changes

The original decision for using Cloudflare was to prevent spam and ddos attack, and while Cloudflare has done shit in the past the assumption was that they're neutrality would go both ways, this seems to not be the truth, their "neutrality" seems to only apply to harassment sites like kiwifarms.

our new setup is not only a lot more powerful but also comes with a firewall setup and DDOS protection directly from the Colocation provider severely reducing the need for Cloudflares ddos protection

I'm targeting next weekend as deployment date for the new servers, but this is highly depended on the RMA's arriving on time

The admins have given me the go ahead to use my discretion to make a post announcing our server hardware and what's been happening. We have been slowly ordering hardware as we iron out and finalize the plan, and so far we have had an r630 and an r730xd arrive. These are taken by Emmi but we do have the hardware coming in. The r630 was surprisingly cheap and is going to be used as a firewall handling our 10g networking internally, and for handling 1g ingress and egress (our uplink). I forgot about the fact you can order daughter cards with SFP+ for fairly cheap now (they're actually only about 30 euro) which saves us money on ordering separate SFP+ cards to slot in. I want to emphasize that I didn't particularly go with dell for any reason (I was trying to go supermicro) but sometimes there's an abundance in the server market and a used dell server is cheaper than a whitebox server. Really depends on what you're trying to do. NUMA is gonna be a pain for a firewall (but like, we can remove one of the cpus. a dual socket board is not going to have numa problems if we run it with one cpu).

Times Change - R.I.P Old TransFem.org

1/2 [ No, we aren't Shutting down ]

It's now been nearly a year, since TransFem.org was started.

It started from pure boredom, when thought said boredom i found that the domain transfem.org was available, and so i decided to buy it, with the new domain at hand i was unsure what todo with it so i made a poll back then on tech.lgbt, if i should make a mastodon instance, a lemmy instance or a matrix instance.

and well i think you know yourself what won, at the time this happend i was still pretty new to fedi, i had been on fedi since 2022 but i've never really been active, till i started said mastodon instance, after a few days (i think it was even just 2 days) i decided, that i didn't really like Mastodon atall and during that time i also got in contact with Marie, a friend of mine i had known from some other projects, i asked her if she wanted to join the project and she was up for it, she was at the time also interested in soapbox, which she then recommend after i said how i don't like mastodon (Note: non of us knew the backstory of that fork now the devs), and so we quickly switched to that instead, and started getting a small community of users, the instance at the time was pretty chill and using fedi was very cool, it felt like the social media that's finally not full of shit, as the instance grew we noticed how bugged soapbox and rebased were so we forked it, during that we noticed the backstory of soapbox and that the devs are transphobes, so we eventually ended up switching to firefish, all was good for a bit and we grew to around 120 users, till we got some questionable details about firefish, which caused us to start our own misskey fork as we were always adding instance specific tweaks to our stuff and firefish was panning major changes (Bun elysia rewrite, Scylladb) which we didn't wanna deal with as we personally had bad experiences with NoSQL databases and didn't want to depend on an upstream that does this kind of drastic changes alot which then end up half finished.

thus we started a fork for our instance, obsessed with sharks as i am, i came up with the name "Sharkey", and so we continued adding features we needed on our instance to Sharkey.

at this point i had about 300 followers and was talking about Sharkey a lot, this caused other people to notice its existence, at that time i wasn't aware of the many Misskey forks nor the stigma around them, which is why i continued to post about it alot, but that caused alot of negative posts about "Yet another fork", but also people migrating from FireFish to Sharkey, at the time i was helping with this and considering Sharkey more as a our instance + a group of friends thing, so ofc i also memed around in my "bubble" this caused more people to become aware of the project, and so the load on devs increased as Sharkey was no longer just a single instance project, and we decided to a community oriented model.

Hey, I understand this is a lot to ask of y’all but I want this to remain a space we can stay long term. We're currently running into issues with our hardware limitations and unfortunately we are going to be having to upgrade our hardware and that costs money. There’s been several discussions sporadically about how to approach doing so, and today we have finally worked out a feasible plan on what we want to do in order to address this need. We took the approach of trying to start off with something easily scalable with the downside of being a bit an expensive upfront cost. While we could go and run this on cheaper, older hardware it will cost us significantly more in the long term due to power consumption in the data center. After doing hours of discussion with multiple people we have decided that the best way to host this instance without falling for traps like vendor lock in (looking at you aws) is to own our server hardware and rent out a space in a data center to give it power and network connectivity. We looked at various approaches and designs architecturally from things like utilizing vpses and dedis, and after a long discussion we have come to this conclusion. This is a lot to ask, but I genuinely think that it is going to be so much more worth it than cheaping out short term and causing long term financial issues. We’ve asked multiple people and compared multiple vendors to make this as cost effective as possible.

There's been quite a bit of talk about this, so I may as well officially confirm it:

lethallava.land will be moving from Firefish to Sharkey. I (@esm) have joined the dev team for Sharkey and will assist with the project, fixing bugs and adding features as needed. I have not yet decided a date for the migration, but work is underway and it will be very soon.

I'm glad to have supported the Firefish project for this long, throughout its ups and downs; maintaining such a large-scale project can be very difficult, and I sincerely wish the best for Kainoa in their current and future endeavors.

#lll

chuckya,

As previously announced and due to the ongoing spam wave across the network, lethallava.land will be migrating today at 2:00 PM CST (UTC-6), around 30 minutes from now. I'm aware that this is on such short notice, but the tools offered by Firefish currently are unfortunately not adequate for handling the spam wave, so a migration is needed.
