For those of you that are interested in armour, I've recently discovered the Totally Tanked podcast.

The format is an informal, but well-informed, chat between the hosts. Then they each review a beer at the end of the episode. I can recommend it.

Plus, they're on the fediverse, at @TotesTanked

@TotesTanked @militaryhistory @worldwarshistory you're welcome. I've been enjoying the podcast, so it just makes sense to help spread the word 🙂

Because they bring me such joy, I will share with you all the software testing videos I share with my Software Design and Development students.

Video 1/3: “We don’t need user testing! We already know our users”

Children at a playground completely ignoring the slide, and sliding down the smooth hill upon which the slide is mounted

@inthehands I suspect @JetlagJen will appreciate these videos.

I've started reading Devon's Island by @clacksee

Only read two chapters, but it's off to a good start. I had a tear in my eye at the end of chapter one and was seriously pissed off at Devon's mum by the end of chapter two.

I use @organicmaps to navigate and @streetcomplete to help improve the maps. I love them both. 💗

Thanks for being awesome guys.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@worriernun @organicmaps @streetcomplete likewise. I only discovered StreetComplete a year or so ago, but it's made a huge difference. I've contributed a lot more using it than I would have without it.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@elmussol @worriernun @organicmaps @streetcomplete I used to use OSMAnd but it became almost unusably slow on my phone. I find Organic Maps to be a lot faster.

They're both the same at the core. OSMAnd has more features, but none that are essential for me. YMMV, of course.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@smsm1 @worriernun @organicmaps @streetcomplete I didn't know Every Door. Installing that now :)

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@richlv @elmussol @worriernun I used to use it for GPX recording, but I've installed a separate app for that now.

Just a little thing that sometimes bothers me a tiniest bit is...where do I belong in the book world as a nonbinary author?

I can't join "Women in Horror"-month, or grab a seat with the guys, I could maybe be with LGBTQAI+ but those are also often separated to men and women (but include trans men and trans women of course), or by sexuality.

Where does pansexual, semi-masculine, non-binary person go to promote their books?

@hiisikoloart I've had similar feelings at times. I don't have any answers, but I can offer solidarity.

Happy Trans* Day of Visibility!

Trans people are mappers, and hackers, and cartographers, and have always been a part of the OpenStreetMap community.

The OpenStreetMap project is creating a freely licenced map of the world, based on how things actually are, based on how they act, and appear, not based on what some government says. OSM is trans positive.

@sanfierro @openstreetmap I think it just means different things can go in the place of the asterisk. In this case, trans man, trans woman.

We've been trying a supermarket click&collect thing. It is definitely not convenient to be emailed multiple times to review what we bought. I don't care if it only takes two taps, it is not worth my time to review a 50p bag of cloves.

(And yes, it probably has taken longer to complain here than it would have done to do the review, but posting here is for my benefit, not the supermarket's)

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@JetlagJen the whole user experience is less than stellar. Some very minor changes would make a huge difference.

feels like this month we’ve run the gamut of various failure modes of free software and open source software in a world where the person maintaining it has to keep a roof over their head and feed their kids.

Without FLOSS I suspect that technology would not be that much different today from how it was in 1998. The efficiencies it has enabled have underpinned the revolution from web 2.0 onwards, but at this point a lot of infra free software looks more like working for google for free

RPBook,

@cstross @zip honestly, I am more and more coming to the conclusion that everything is an argument for UBI.

We've started watching #Enterprise. My #Dune geek heart was warmed by a brief mention of "Arrakis Prime" at the start of s01e04.

Edit: I misheard, it was Loracus Prime.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@tkinias right at the start, a woman is in the canteen, eating and reading a book about bugs. Somebody sits next to her and she says something about the bugs on Arrakis Prime.

RPBook,
@RPBook@historians.social avatar

@tkinias it's literally the first scene, but having just gone back to check, I've realised I misheard ☹️ You can see the book text in the first few seconds, and it's Loracus Prime.

@tkinias I haven't seen Voyager, but I'm sure I'll get to it eventually 🙂

Today I learned that there was a "wheelbarrow pedestrian" craze in the late 1880s, when lots of people went on very long distance walks, pushing wheelbarrows.

The Victorians were an odd bunch.

@uchujinfilms back when I repaired TVs, I had this conversation more than once:

Customer: I could have done that! What am I paying you for?

Me: Why didn't you do it?

Customer: I didn't know that was all that was wrong with it.

Me: I did. That knowledge is what you're paying for.
