Last week I suggested to spouse that we walk down to get the mail. For context, our driveway is a tenth of a mile, and it was about six in the evening. I'd already fed the horses and they'd gone down to the front of the pasture to graze for the night. But as we walked down the driveway heads lifted and horses nickered. It felt good. T

Do you use semicolons? Correctly?

YES! In my early days with a big digital-first publisher they prohibited the use of semicolons because in those days ereader technology was such that some characters weren't rendered.

I don't use them a lot, but there are times when they're necessary, so now that I'm self-publishing they're used.

I love semicolons about as much as I love the Oxford comma.

One of the things we did "back in the day" (say early 2000's) was have author groups where maybe 5-10 authors were in a group, we had a website, a newsletter, I guess now there'd be social media presence, and we each agreed to promote the group in each others' newsletters .... I suppose that's out of fashion, but just thinking I'd love to get more 👀 on my books.

@MarkRDavid @bookstodon I, um, have a quasi-sekrit SF pen name that's campy, and while his name was theoretically retired, I keep thinking I'd like to go back and write in that world again.... I'd be up for it. He has a dozen novellas out, IIRC.

I finished my paper for Religion & SF (REL635) talking about the nature of God & religion in Greg Bear's "The Forge of God". Instructor said 8-10 pages. I tapped out at 13, but feel like that's okay. Close enough, right?

Brain is utterly kaput. Was hoping to work on a fantasy/eclipse-themed short story (sub call deadline is 4/7), but not sure I'll be able to tonight. I've opened and closed the file twice.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @Elizabeth3 @neurodiversity @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Frankly as an autist whose special interest includes writing/words I find that person-first language is clunky and ineffective in conveying the entirety of living neurodivergently. We don't say, it's an apple with a red skin. We say it's a red apple. It's a baseball, not a ball used in baseball games.

Person-first language actually decenters the individual's lived experience and implies passivity.

I started reading a book on "cult" cinema written by people who worked for TCM Underground and it is just making me sad.

So much is out of print, not on streaming, and barely or not at all available through illicit means.

And these are films that people are writing Books about. What hope does a film that didn't catch the attention of a critic have? (Often, the answer is none!)

@ajroach42 Question for you on that, assuming they're still good, my spouse has A LOT of VHS tapes he recorded episodes of tv shows, movies, etc. on. (like several 6' tall/3' wide shelves full). I can't find any good way to get that to digital. Is there one?

@ajroach42 I suspect my goal is cheapest/fastest and my spouse's would be best quality as reasonable as possible price-wise.

When I looked at it before it was a transfer thing + a VCR but VCRs were running $300-400. 🤨

And awesome, I wasn't sure if those dongles they sold on Amazon would be worth it. Sounds like they would be.

He has no problems playing the videos and watching them. :) And I've been using OBS and want to experiment more with using it to create videos beyond streaming this summer.

Not in my fiction, no, and usually not for nonfiction. However, for social media/etc. I tend to use them for side comments or clarification. There's been discussion among the #ActuallyAutistic community that we use them more often because we want to make sure we're being clear.

I'd love for my writing to be part of my multi-faceted income stream. I have ADHD and am multi-passionate so I can't do just one thing. But ideally I'd start my day by writing for a couple of hours then move on to working on other self-employment and scholarly pursuits.

@fraying Totally. I really feel like since Automattic bought WooCommerce, then Jetpack, then started getting a bit too big for its britches it's totally abandoned the source. I know there were issues with the direction of Gutenberg and accessibility back in the day. Makes me wonder if they got VC money or something... I know their technical support is not good.

Daffodils preparing to bloom in a few weeks. These are later varieties and they always come later than the little yellow early ones. As "mulch" you see the shredded feed sacks we use as animal bedding and weed control. They are biodegradable and help with carbon sequestration.

This is great news, and should hopefully significantly cut down on abandoned servers being used to send spam!

I have a question for #bookstodon I've been thinking about writing #cozy #mysteries
in line with the genres I already write. However, I write for fun and for my "happy place", I'm wondering if there has to be a murder in a cozy mystery or if I could deal with other crimes and if they can be written without all the frenetic/zany side characters? Is that a different mystery subgenre?

Thoughts appreciated.
