well that was a whole thing. Took a trailer load of stuff to storage as my "test drive" for the new steering damper. Damper is great, problem solved. So as per the zero-sum-game that is LR maintenance it sprung a massive leak from the fuel pressure regulator and pumped out about 50l of diesel onto the bruce hwy.

Kels_316,
@Kels_316@aus.social avatar

regular is almost new, I put it in with the new motor. Anyway there's a LR parts place in Gympie so I picked up a new regulator ($400, gulp), installed it under a shady tree. It leaked instantly. Lmao.

@Kels_316@aus.social avatar

You get 2 new gaskets in the box, and they are single use items. So I pull the new one off and have a look. There's a manufacturing defect on the machined face where the gasket sits, hence the leak. I ponder on this for a while, and the concept of LR maintenance in general.

Kels_316,
@Kels_316@aus.social avatar

My old one has a perfect machined face, no problem, but the actual regulator unit is rooted. The new one has a rooted face but the regulator is fine. The regulator is held in by a circlip. I scrounge around in the storage shed and fuck me, I find a pair of circlip pliers! I swap the regulators and put my old unit back on with the new gasket - perfect, no leaks.

so I put the new one back together with the fucked regulator, take it back and explain everything to the guy, he gives me a refund. Result.

Then because the car is literally covered in diesel I take it through the local car wash and now it's also clean. Everything is coming up Kels.

old steering damper is fuuuuuucked on the defender so in an effort to reduce the "death wobble" I'm fitting a new one. First check out the state of the old one. 24yrs and half a million km....

easy to do, just a couple of 17mm spanners required to get the old one off, then check the bolt isn't knackered, this one is fine. In a perfect world you'd always fit a new nyloc nut but that's for fancy lads.

old and busted vs new hotness. I went with a "tough dog" brand adjustable one, around middle of the road for this particular part. I don't need the full off-road one with the spring, but having some adjustment is nice so you can dial it up a bit for driving shoddy tracks. Who am I kidding, this is getting set once and never touched again...

Kels_316,
@Kels_316@aus.social avatar

New one in. Only PITA was that the new one has a 14mm nyloc nut instead of the two 17mm lock nuts so I had to go and get a 14mm spanner out of the shed. Now to see if this has improved matters.

I also got a set of panhard rod bushes, which are the other main culprits for steering death wobble, but I want to isolate what is actually causing it so I will do those after I've had a test drive with the new damper.

Out for dinner and the menu has “Japanese tapas” and I said “they could just call it Japas”

Zero laughs.

Did Switzerland refuse to invade Iraq or something? Local woolworths doesn’t have Swiss cheese.

    interacting with a dude selling a land rover and he came out with this gem: "you can only test drive it if you've had a series land rover before, it's not safe to drive if you haven't had one."
