I read a lot, listen to a lot of podcasts, watch cartoons and (frequently cheesy) movies.

I speak a few different languages besides English.

Otherwise I'm around. I think the land I live on used to belong to the Nacotchtank but I'm not sure. He/him.

Serious #Downfall vibes in the series finale of #Rome. I’m not an educated classicist and I know they had to change things for the show and its collapsing budget by this point, but I’m a bit skeptical that the real story was like this.

No wonder people see this show as a precursor to Game of Thrones - I may get round to watching that. I’ll have to rewatch season 1 later.

I also just bought Ten Caesars and will read it soon.

Yeah, I didn’t have HBO until very recently. I remember people talking about how good it was and how much they wanted more money/seasons, and now it makes sense.

I also never watched game of thrones when it was new, but I’m watching the first episode now and it’s like…ah, right, not only is it a thinner imitation of Rome, but no wonder it looks and sounds like this.

We’ll see, I’m A: tired after getting up at 4:20 AM to take my wife to an 8 AM appointment, B: not sleeping well anyway and C: having a few beers, plus D: I don’t watch a lot of dramatic TV, so it may take a bit longer for me than most people.

But I’m biased towards real history, which I’m also trying to account for. I’ve missed out on a lot of things in life for reasons, so maybe this will be different.

The budget problem probably has something to do with it.

I’d say that’s taste changing. The myth of decline is real and applies to everything cultural.

My big issue is that I know so much about real people that it’s really hard for fictional people to get my attention, especially if they’re trying to say “look at this fictional person making fictional hard choices, doesn’t that suck?” because I can just go point at the mountain of things I know about real people making harder ones.

GrittyLipids,
@GrittyLipids@c.im avatar

@bookstodon @curmudgeonaf

I imagine this is true for a good number of people, and I further imagine that this is why fictional shows seem to have a lot of naked people, a lot of insane fantasy/sci-fi violence, or both.

Off the top of my head I don’t remember how much the book of #Dune talks about the Harkonnen use of gladiatorial combat, but the movie draws a relatively subtle link between their idea of it and bullfighting - the guys in the wide black hats are like picadors, who stab the bull with lances to weaken it. I’ll avoid spoilers on a 60-year-old book or the new movie, but it’s a fun subtle thing.

@SoftwareTheron

I’m not really talking about the challenging. That’s just like duels and having stand-ins so the nobles express discontent while killing other people instead of themselves. It’s more how both houses have ways of proving the butch manliness of their leaders in front of the masses - the #Atreides kill bulls, the #Harkonnens kill captives. Even if the other houses have versions of that, there’s a very specific resemblance between Atreides and Harkonnen.

I think Herbert mentions how Leto’s father died fighting a bull, but that’s about it, unless that comes up in books after the first. I need to read Messiah, which is conveniently next on the list after #InfiniteDetail.

I forgot how much I hated the sound of that fucking idiot fake cowboy’s voice. Rich bitch from New England playing at being a working class Texan. That’s not even considering his stupid pablum bullshit about sensing Putin’s soul.

Also this doc has gone well off the rails of history and into modern information campaign stuff. No mention of red mercury, no mention of the IMF/World Bank, no shock here.

I never realized how close the Kurils are to Japan. Leaving aside, y’know, all of Russian and Japanese history prior to 1945, no wonder the Americans were so keen on becoming friends with Japan after the war.

Even if we definitely should have insisted on more trials of murderers and criminals like Shiro Ishii.

I always judge a book by its cover. Go to the library. Pick something that looks barely read. The popular books tend to be uninteresting to me. Pick one with a thoughtfully designed cover. Something the designer felt they owed some effort to. Nothing where the author's name is the biggest thing on the cover. Read the blurb. Take a chance. It certainly paid off big time with this: huge ideas on the future we are building for ourselves

I think I’m going to be able to finish this today and it’s fucking great. A very British look at the AI apocalypse, as distinguished from the very American but also very good series by William Hertling that talks about a different kind of AI apocalypse.

Watching the BBC documentary on via . Transparently obvious that this was made because of , but at the same time it’s an interesting overview of Einstein’s life between exile from Germany and turning up in the US.

I also thought they were taking liberties with his voice until they showed a clip of the real Einstein speaking. Turns out not so much, though I kinda want to watch more of that now.

Went to the African-American history and culture museum yesterday - everyone should. Despite what I imagine some people believe, it’s not just violence and trauma porn, it’s a lot of day to day normal stuff on the upper floors. My wife wondered where the slavery and Jim Crow stuff was, but it occurred to me that it would probably be concentrated somewhere else in the building - excessive focus on slavery and trauma is a complaint I’ve heard about cultural stuff usual made for white audiences.

If I get a chance to go back I’ll have to see if they’ve got a Wilmington 1898 exhibit and what they have about COINTELPRO-related fuckery. Probably the single most horrifying thing in there is the child-sized shackles, but there’s also plenty of stuff in there that isn’t evil or soaked in blood.

Probably the most informative exhibit (“favorite” sounds wrong) was the segregated train car. You really get a sense of how petty and cheap the racists were - the Black bathrooms are tiny (about the size of airplane ones now), white ones have a “lounge” area, which is weird, but regardless of how weird it was they had more space. Plus you couldn’t use the suitcase storage areas unless you were white, which is just ridiculous.

I’ll have to look into that. Sci-fi is sci-fi but early sci-fi is more impressive for the track it laid for its followers.
