FontsInUse,

@eWalthert It’s all fonts! (directly or indirectly)

FontsInUse,

@eWalthert You’re welcome! Vaméa probably is a font, too, but I failed to find it – too many of those quirky serifs.

Some folks use “lettering” as an umbrella term for all things involving letters (with type being a subcategory), and that’s fair. And some of the examples fall under what we tag as “lettering derived from typeface”, a.k.a. fonts in indirect use. https://fontsinuse.com/tags/853/lettering-derived-from-typeface

FontsInUse,

@jerry1970 Stephen’s article covers lettering vs. type and font vs. typeface. He also has a useful diagram (from a whole book) about type anatomy terms like serif, see https://typeanatomy.com/post/640694338958000129/type-anatomy-in-six-letters-ever-since-the-book
More about Latin type anatomy by Typomil https://typomil.com/anatomy/index.html and @elliotjaystocks https://fonts.google.com/knowledge/introducing_type/an_overview_of_latin_type_anatomy

Unlike font and typeface, “font-face” is not a term commonly used to discuss type. Rather, it’s exclusively used in CSS to specify fonts in websites:

I know this is an extremely niche post and only a few people will know or even care, but HOW can the world’s best watch company, Patek Philippe, make amazing watches with incredible technical prowess and then just phone it in on the typography on the dial?!

Truly the most 🤢 watch dial in my opinion and an affront to their entire catalogue of beautiful watches.

Patek Philippe World Time 5231G Enamel Dial 18K White Gold watch with very boring and possibly artificially condensed all-caps serif type.
Patek Philippe World Time 5231J Enamel Dial 18K Yellow Gold watch with ugly typography around the dial.
A green Patek Philippe World Time 5930P Chronograph Platinum Green Dial watch with cheap-looking, san-serif typography.

Signal is an informal script typeface from the 1930s. @opentype is currently running a campaign to crowdfund a faithful digitization of all three weights, plus a variable version, which will be made available for free.

We just added a number of uses of Signal, from Germany, the USA, and the Netherlands – together with in-use examples for similar scripts from that period such as Mammut and Energos. Gretel’s of Mountain Hardwear features a series of custom by Andrea Trabucco-Campos & Fabiola Mejía, a feat. script caps based on Excoffon’s Mistral, Vincent Chan’s upcoming Quadrant, and, on the website, Greg Gazdowicz’s Roboto Serif.
More: https://fontsinuse.com/uses/56114/mountain-hardwear-rebrand-and-seek-wilder-pat

FontsInUse,

The custom Hardwear comes in four flavors: Display, Round+Sharp, Round, and Sharp, each in five weights. One source of inspiration was a 19th-century wood typeface that, just like the nut in the logo, combines angular outer with round inner contours (see Ancient Gothic https://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/219583/ancient-gothic-wood).

Source: https://gretelny.com/mountain-hardwear

Detail of a type specimen for the wood typeface Nº 205 (and the lighter and narrower Nº 119), issued by H. W. Caslon & Cie, Paris, in 1900. Source: Gretel https://gretelny.com/mountain-hardwear

FontsInUse,

@ronanmcd But is the brand really built on a single typeface? The initial post lists four different ones. Also, the custom typeface comes in twenty different styles, some of which are much less penetrating. See e.g. “MOUNTAIN” in the logo, that’s also Hardwear.
