You wanted more weird Cornwall. This part of Cornwall was so weird, the early Christians went OTT on their cross carving to counteract it.

#WritersCoffeeClub Who do you acknowledge in your work?

In this current WIP, it’s my two older twin siblings, Guy and Sarah, who died shortly after birth. They got to live to adulthood and have adventures in one of my stories. It’s not a true life, but as their sister, it’s the best I can offer.

Hi, I'm an as-of-yet unpublished YA author and high school math teacher who just joined Mastodon. I'm looking out for suggestions of who to follow in the writing/teaching community!

    @cloudguy thank you so much for reading and sharing. 🙏

    Having always lived here I know what there is to love and hate about Cornwall. I’ve not long moved further down, so I’m closer to all the ancient sites, which have always been big draws for me as I always liked history and archaeology.

    Had enough of the Black Friday bollocks. It wasn’t even a thing not so many years ago. Another detrimental American import commercialising a holiday we don’t even acknowledge in order to force us to buy shit we don’t need. Fuelling our throw away culture and fucking up the planet further and faster.

    #WritersCoffeeClub What do I prefer to write with?

    I only have a laptop so I typically pick a comfy sofa and write there. I’ll also write on my mobile and with pen and paper if I’m away from my laptop.

    #WritersCoffeeClub any scene I couldn’t write?

    I think it’s important for novels to show the light and dark side of humanity. However, I would never write a scene from the POV of the antagonist glorifying their need to assault/murder/incite hate etc. We need more stories from the victims POV.

    Neither would I kill off a character purely for shock value which does nothing to the plot.

    I would never write a book with an unresolved story. I owe it to the reader to wrap up what I promised to.

    #NaNoWriMo update:
    10% completed, meaning I'm behind (as expected).

    However, I'm also doing a Curtis Brown Creative writing course on crime fiction over the next six weeks. Today, I started working through the module and tomorrow, I hopefully will get more words down since it is complimenting my current WIP. I need to work out who my murderer is!

    I have a main character in the current story I am writing with #Endometriosis and I don't want to make one or two vague mentions of her condition and allow the character to carry on as normal for the remainder of the book.

    Is there anyone here with the condition who can offer me some suggestions to make her believable in her day-to-day life?

    #WritersCoffeeClub Do you keep a notebook or digital device by your bed if you have an idea during the night?

    I have a Notes app on my phone which is typically by my bed and useful for jotting down ideas.

    Mr Cox is more appreciative of this option compared to a physical notebook as it means I don’t have to turn the light on and wake him. 😆

    My sleep paralysis episodes are great fodder for horror story ideas.

    As I've said many times, I'm not a fan of 24 hour rolling news because it tends to mislead you badly (but not deliberately) about events. But I am glued to the coverage of the Covid inquiry testimony, looking on in absolute horror at how it's laying bare quite how ill-prepared, over-confident and dismissive of lives the Tories were. Hancock, and of course Johnson, should go to prison.

    Emmacox,
    @Emmacox@writing.exchange avatar

    @ianbetteridge I think everyone wanted to be the woman on SAS who got to call Hancock a weasel faced cunt to his face.

    #WritersCoffeeClub Best writing advice you’ve heard or read?

    Terry Pratchett’s when he said the first draft is you telling yourself the story. It reminds me not to pressure myself into thinking those first words must be brilliantly written.

    Writing advice is there to be explored. There are no rules. It’s a case of finding what keeps you motivated and makes a happy writing habit. What works for you won’t necessarily work for everyone.

    Merry Maidens stone circle. Cornwall is full of merry maidens turned to stone for dancing on the sabbath. The likely reason is in the etymology. Men Don means stone dance in Cornish.

    Emmacox,
    @Emmacox@writing.exchange avatar

    @NatureMC You may be right. When I visit stone circles and standing stones I get the impression the stones are 'individuals' with their own unique personalities. Some of the ancient stone crosses I've seen look to have once been standing stones, repossessed by the Christians and turned into an idol of worship to their one God.

    From the Celtic language still clinging on, the names appear to be very much to do what is physically there.

    Maybe try writing the villain's story, just for a change. If nothing else, you'll end up being able to write more compelling antagonists.

    #WritingTips #AmWriting #writing #authodons

    Emmacox,
    @Emmacox@writing.exchange avatar

    @Mountaineerdave @golgaloth I feel well written villains typically believe their actions are making things better, even if it’s only for themselves.

    Pure evil doesn’t exist, neither does pure good. Even the heroes have a darkness in them, and the villains equally have a chink of light.

    When developing my villains, I like to ask why they are like this. What drove them here. Often I find they like to think themselves as the hero or main character in their story.

    #WritersCoffeeClub Beta Readers?

    I’ve got about seven betas at varying levels of both reliability and detail of feedback. I often beta read for them as well as many are writers.

    If you need a beta reader, I’ve found the #WritingCommunity a good place to start. If you get a beta, give them an idea of what feedback you’re looking for and a timescale.

    If you’re a beta reader, try to stick to the writer’s requirements. If you can’t, communicate with the writer. Please, don’t just go silent.

    #WritersCoffeeClub What sounds are present in your writing?

    For soundscapes I use https://mynoise.net

    I prefer ambient background music, white noise or solfeggio frequencies.

    I blogged about this a few weeks ago.

    It should be fine as it’s probably an https address. I have my own Wordpress blog, but I’ve only got a http site address so Mastodon won’t allow me to verify that it belongs to me. 😕

    1. Intro
      I’m an unpublished writer who dabbles in epic fantasy, fairytales, folklore and historical fiction. There is usually a found family twist. I should query, but I never feel I’m ready.

    Check out my profile to find my blog where I also write about local Cornish history and nature.

    1. Pant or Plot?

    I pants mostly. I give the characters a few key scenes to reach and leave them to it. It helps my characters develop more organically.
