@nocontextb5 I am a very model of a modern major general...

Have you heard of expert systems? Probably not. That was the "AI" that was gonna change humanity that billions were being poured into in the 80s. The same news orgs hype stuff up during "AI summers" without even looking into their archives to see what they wrote decades ago.

@timnitGebru "During the years before the middle of the 1970s, the expectations of what expert systems can accomplish in many fields tended to be extremely optimistic. At the beginning of these early studies, researchers were hoping to develop entirely automatic (i.e., completely computerized) expert systems. The expectations of people of what computers can do were frequently too idealistic."

Sounds like a dispatch from the future

Hard seeing so many large-ish accounts so deeply frustrated with Mastodon - in the last week I've seen @TechConnectify @Popehat and @mmasnick discuss their lack of comfort here and how they limit their engagement and interactions.

If BlueSky can get federation with ActivityPub going, I guess that would be a solution - a "brand name" option with resources to run a decent moderation network, and an off-ramp if things get icky there.

@mpjgregoire it's true that the problems they're feeling aren't directly affecting me, but also I spend a whole lot of my time on Mastodon consuming content, and I rely on larger accounts to provide a fair portion of that content.

Hey friends! It is once again that time: I'm putting together this weekend's Installer and want to know everything you're into right now. All the apps/movies/shows/books/podcasts/plant species/raisin alternatives, everything. What are you digging right now?

(Also, sign up now to get Installer a day before everyone else: https://www.theverge.com/pages/installer-newsletter-sign-up)

@davidpierce I'm really enjoying the audio drama podcast "Celeritas". It's about the first near lightspeed space travel test, and how it goes wrong. They've currently produced 10 of 12 episodes in the story.

@timbray I've been enjoying the IFF podcast with the same name as the article's headline - https://www.eff.org/how-to-fix-the-internet-podcast

Nice to have some ideas about solutions floating around.

I have been working an unhealthy amount the last two weeks on what I believe is my most complex video yet. It's a video I've been wanting to make for years about a subject I've always loved.

It's finally finished, rendered, and uploading now. Coming to a screen near you soon!

@TechConnectify @snazzyq So it... insulates?
