I feel like a short explainer for international perspectives might be in order.

Imagine a future where you live in Florida. Right wing nutjobs are in full control of Florida, and they successfully push through independence by rigging the vote.

Florida's social systems are collapsing. Prices are deliberately being pushed out of control in Florida by vulture capitalism. Where states around you still pay $400 for energy for example Florida ppl are now paying $4,000. Food prices, essentials, everything is spiralling. Multiple crises are happening across cost-of-living, civil assembly & right to protest, rights in all spheres, safety for minorities, police, judiciary, politics, media, environment, product water air & food safety, healthcare, business, education.

The population have legally lost the right to leave Florida for a safer, better run state, which kept rights. Because of that corrupted vote.

If you can imagine that nightmare future, that position, the social rifts, the denials, and the consequences, then congratulations, you understand some of what #Brexit is for the #UK.

Look I don't want to be that always cynical yelling at clouds person, but I wasn't that convinced by the @Mastodon statement. It was heavy on describing what the platform looks like right now, and extremely careful to not make any promises about the future, talk about moderation standards, or acknowledge any economic power imbalance between and the . Also cherry-picked XMPP example over, e.g. email which has been raised by users.

A few thoughts for new arrivals & anyone else really, plus the always fragrant topic of enshittification...

Firstly welcome to new folk!! We're happy you're here.

  1. You made a good choice moving out of the corporate media silos. I want to explain why I think so, as I believe it'll shortcut you possibly years of lost time.

  2. If you do choose another corporate silo, you will end up back here, trying to avoid the same problems but just escaping from the new corporate silo where you lost all time investment in 5+ yrs time.

Enshittification of corporate social silos is baked in. Twitter was on the decline path long before Musk. Disinfo, aggression farming, algorithms, ads. Many corp social silos have died or gone comatose already. Google+ Digg Myspace. All corp silos decline as they age. It's the same cycle happening to all the corporate silos, and yes that includes all the new shiny 'we're different this time, please come in to our enclosure' ones.

If it has shareholders, value to users will decline slowly then eventually steeply. 100%📉

Enshittification:
1] Offer free service to attract users.
2] Degrade user experience in favour of advertisers.
3] Degrade ad experience to capture value for shareholders.
4] Farm captive free work userbase. Farm captive sellers advertisers & businesses. They're being exploited, but don't want to lose their time investment & their social graph by switching platform. Extract bulk of value for shareholders.

This is the enshittification cycle. Every platform with shareholders slowly cannibalises it's user experience, it's advertiser experience & business user experience.

Musk is just a more visible data point on the enshittification curve.
Twitter is a 1 node silo, with enshittification profit pressures. This renders it entirely vulnerable to 1 or a handful of individuals whose concerns are profits, not users, let alone society.

There is a Solution. You're looking at it. Fediverse or something with the crucial properties of Fediverse. Multi-platform, multi-node, migration enabled, user owned & operated, Free Open Source Software (FOSS).

Where users can migrate freely tween platforms & nodes, can run own nodes & can even create new forks of the software.

Fediverse has grown to 23,000 nodes. It connects millions of users. Using 30-40 social platforms already.
No ads.
No VCs.
No CEOs.
No corporate profit drive.
No shareholders.
Best moderation I've seen in 40yrs online.

So I have a question for other vegans.

Late 00s probably my reading of land use, climate change, animal agriculture emissions papers & articles led to me biting bullet & doing a complete 180 and going #plantbased, #vegan, mostly #wfpb.

Something came up in conversation today. My skin seemed to slow it's aging quite a lot from that point. I wondered if other long-term decade half plus vegans & plantbased had personal perspectives & experiences related to that??

As far as UI & features, I think #Calckey cpuld take a big chunk of #Twitter users & get them in to the Fedi. I don't know if it can be ready in terms of infrastructure.

Importing Twitter posts directly in to Calckey will certainly be a killer feature though.

This is sort of what I want, a fully managed, updated, patched personal/family solution, (maybe with background caching from Fediverse shared for efficiency) that runs multiple personal servers per person. So each individual can have pixelfed, calckey, mastodon, friendica, kbin, as they like.

Reports that Prigozhin agreed to turn Wagner column around before breaching Moscow / Oka.

Putin wasn't able to pull enough loyalty together to get Prigozhin killed, arrested, stopped. Nor enough loyalty to be able to reliably defend Moscow.

With Prigozhin on edge of Moscow, Putin caved to Prigozhin's original demands, massive change at MoD, #Shoigu (Defense Minister) & #Gerasimov's (Chief of General Staff) power broken.

Prigozhin likely wasn't able to reliably protect Wagner families from FSB (raids).

Putin profoundly weakened, Wagner + allies expecting reprisals, no matter what safety guarantees have been agreed.

-Marching on the capital almost unopposed.
-Killing an unknown number of servicemen.
-Shooting down 8 or so airframes, killing their crew.
... and then as he was about to engage the capital defenses. The mercenary leader gets given a deal, including defence restructuring and leaves with his forces and power intact.

Prigozhin still occupies Rostov-on-Don the organisation and logistical HQ for the war in Ukraine.

Rostov. Better the devil who's new?

-Prigozhin reportedly going to some sort of exile in Belarus.
-Wagner PMCs packing up in Rostov, etc a major leverage point to give away.
-Wagner troops who took part in coup 'will not be prosecuted' says press release.
-Wagners who did not take part will be absorbed in to the Ministry of Defence.

As veteran reporter John Simpson observed first hand, the KGB coup attempt in 91 finished after 3 days, but the Gorbachev regime was too badly damaged by it anyway and fell.

In addition looking at Russian history, every Russian regime for several hundred years that has fallen, has occured after an unpopular failure of a military 'special' operation of some type.

Wanted to keep this burger craving yum.

I had a real craving for a (ok it's vegan but tasty) burger experience today. I haven't cooked that in a while so made this after my workout:

Garden chives spicy hummus (fries digging goodness)
Quartered a Kalamata olive loaf for the bun
tomato red onion ketchup mustard lettuce
a Gro burger done in the air fryer with a portion of thick cut potato fries (chips UK)

Not rocket science or clever cooking, but it really just hit that craving I had a big hankering for! #cook #cooking #vegan #plantBased #food #burger @vegans @vegan

God yeah, same.
Brighton for example, the UK's San Francisco, has multiple vegan only shops.
Kindly, Infinity Foods, HISBE, Vgean shop, and the weirdly named The Captain Pig etc.
Local vegan shops are a joy in places that have the local concentrations to support them. I do notice that even in my local village shop in a very traditional/rural UK area they have a defined entirely vegan shelving area as a recent innovation. #vegan #plantBased
