@mcdanlj Or Apple?

3DPrintingDad,
@3DPrintingDad@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj I feel in general that consumers are increasingly materialized by these companies. I haven't bought a Samsung for a while now and never had a Pixel. Lately, it's been Moto phones for me. Security updates have been regular so far across the models I've had and they are inexpensive.

3DPrintingDad,
@3DPrintingDad@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcdanlj That bites. I hadn't realized they did that. I've had good luck with the two I've had, but I'm definitely not loyal to them, should anything like that happen to me.

This video by
@jimseven makes me happy: a more affordable hand-grinder for coffee that doesn't suck.

At some point, I may need to invest in one of these or a "big sibling" and make an adapter for my 3D-printed motorized grinder that works with it.

Another brilliant video by @cnc_kitchen This time, he explores home-made composite materials using an unexpected tool - a ReCreator!

Some techy stuff that'll hit all the hashtags…

As a bit of a project, I noticed my old is quite near my 3D printer (basement) and it just runs a server. It has more capacity than that, so I attached an old usb camera, loaded and wrote some to take a pic of the printer and stuff it into both a web page and a home assistant dashboard.

Some innovation though…

3DPrintingDad,
@3DPrintingDad@fosstodon.org avatar

@ottaross Honestly, I use Octoprint even with the printer in the same area. Not having to fiddle with SD cards and such is enough of a benefit for me, along with being able to upgrade firmware without needing to plug my laptop into the printer's USB port. I still get up to monitor the first layer, so I'm not giving up my movement.

Rather sad I can't play Roblox on my Steam Deck any more. 😞

3DPrintingDad,
@3DPrintingDad@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane That's the rationale by the Roblox team. They say that the Wine compatibility layer allows people to cheat. (The Steam Deck, being Linux-based, requires Wine to run Roblox.)

I dunno. There are alternative anti-cheat mechanisms but I get it. Just sad. At least I can still play on my laptop.

3DPrintingDad,
@3DPrintingDad@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane It's interesting. Most of the games are simplistic grind-fests, but there are some gems. Yes, there is a game creation studio but I've not really used it. My youngest son likes playing Roblox games with friends and occasionally ropes me in.

There has been controversy in that the Roblox game makes money off the efforts of under-age kids who make games and essentially don't get paid for their efforts.

The Verge article on the best printer in 2024 is just completely brilliant in so many ways.

And also kinda sad.

@ross Looks pretty much like the one we got over a decade ago for under $100. It has been rock solid and the generic toner we buy is dirt cheap.

Wish everything was that easy to maintain.

Finally got my de-bricked and working again.

Had to purchase a custom-ish eMMC adapter off of that scary retailer in China, and it took nearly three weeks to get here XD

Also got a webcam for it, and excitedly set it up, but... I can barely see anything, because of course, webcams are pretty wide-angle.

@RL_Dane Shoot. Sorry you had to go through that. I'm glad you got it working again! 😁 This is why I choose printers that are user-serviceable: one can easily keep a printer working for will over a decade... If one can get into it.

It's that time of year. Many, many rabbits are given as gifts, then summarily abandoned. If you are considering a rabbit, ever, these are the things to consider:

  • Rabbits can easily live 8-14 years. It's a long commitment and something one should not take lightly.
  • Rabbits must and do chew; their teeth grow continually. This means they will chew on anything handy to keep their teeth at a proper length. USB cords, power cables, couches, boxes, bookcases, etc. You can help by

Holy shit no wonder why I was stuck forever in the original Sam&Max! This black thing in the middle that doesn't react to the Examine and Use commands is an elevator that only reacts to Walk 🤦‍♂I would've never found that on my own

I absolutely love this video by @cnc_kitchen. This novel slicing technique shows promise and I could certainly see this being incorporated into an open-source slicer platform, such as @prusaslicer and have it propagate through related code bases.
