“How can I be antisemitic and Islamophobic at the same time?”
He thinks, or more likely wants to project, the idea that Jews and Muslims are two mutually exclusive camps and never the twain shall meet. This serves Reform's far-right position of divide and conquer, taking out each minority one by one.
It is infuriating that this framing lines up so neatly with the contrarian tendencies of the left.
I'm not saying there aren't any tensions between Muslims and Jews in the UK. I'm saying that nobody is providing an alternative to having your side chosen for you. Why is it so hard to find newspapers that speak to Jewish fears that don't rant about refugees? Why is it so hard to find media personalities that speak out against racist dog whistles who don't put antisemitism at the arse end of a hierarchy of discrimination?
The syncretic gap is not economically left and socially right.
It's pro-societal justice without an exception for Jews.
Apparently Nigel Farage will be appearing on BBC Question Time tomorrow night. What could possibly go wrong? Has the BBC learned nothing from the debacle that was Brexit, in no small part fuelled by the supposedly impartial organisation giving disproportionate air time to racists and xenophobes?
Arguably, Reform is doing a great job of splitting the right-wing vote, but conversely it's their over-inflated presence that has pushed the Tories this far to the right in the first place.
A disingenuous man tries to tell us that Diane Abbott is both expelled and a part of the Labour Party, in some Schrodinger's state of confusion.
Going to be grand with this guy running the country, isn't it? /s
Labour doesn't know what to do, they hate Diane Abbott but losing another seat to an independent in London would look bad. It won't effect their chances of Government but these are vain, public-school boys and they have to WIN (especially against a Black Lady...)
I have to be wary of my own (anti-Tory) bias, but two days ago the BBC politics live feed image was Sunak playing football, one day ago it Sunak smiling and pointing, and today it's Rachel Reeves making a funny face. We also get Ed Davey falling off a paddle board today. I'm just pointing out what I see. #ukpol#ge2024
Why would the nationalisation of Thames Water end up putting its debt on the public books? If a company goes bust, and the govt buys the remains, surely the investors simply lose their investment and the debt falls to zero?
They want water companies to operate as profit makers, so they should accept when they go bust too.
UK postal voting:
I applied for a postal vote, since I was away for the recent local elections and forgot until too late.
Seems easy to do and can either cover you for specific elections or for three years.
You have to apply at least 11 working days in advance, and will need to photograph your signature to upload. https://www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote #UKPol
I would like to meet the person who advised Sunak that National Service would be a policy to win an election.
Quite apart from being a bad idea on many levels, I'm amazed at its stupidity as an election policy. #ukpol#ukpolitics
After a late night wine and politics session with my grandson and his partner, Sunak's seemingly crazy policy announcements suddenly make sense.
He is not trying to defeat Labour. He's trying to defeat Reform. In the light of that, National Service makes sense. Labour may trounce the Tories, but Reform could completely destroy them. Ergo, try to take the wind from Reform, everyone else has already left the room. #ukpol#ukpolitics
