The trouble with politics in the UK - & to varying extents elsewhere as well - is that political parties have ceased to campaign in order to govern, and instead govern (or, in opposition, develop policies) in a manner which regards the campaigning impact as the sole metric of the value of a policy.

The Tories latest offering of national service is an example of such. It won't make life better for those who have to do it. It won't make the armed forces or the alternative services any... (1/5)

No, the sole justification for it as a policy is that it's popular with a particular demographic that the Tories need to bolster their vote share in. The fact that doing it would be a waste of money - and would take money from other, better, programmes - is neither here nor there to the Tories. (2/5)

Who cares if it wrecks a carefully coated, working programme with hundreds of trained staff working for the benefit of the recipients? The recipients aren't going to vote Tory anyway (demographically speaking).

But attracting back a couple of % of the Tory-ReFUK floating voters? That's worth wasting a few million of the public purse on and introducing vast uncertainty into the previously settled programme. (3/5)

The idea that policies should be thought out, costed and have attainable effects with measurable deliverables is so much mist to the Tories & Labour at this juncture.

Neither Tory nor Labour have bothered to produce a fully-costed manifesto for years. It's all just pie-in-the-sky, with policies designed to be campaigning soundbites, not a programme for government. (4/5)

If you're not sure about if you have valid ID for getting to vote (because of the Tories bullshit voter supression laws), then just apply for a postal vote.

The kind who studies for their PPL and instrument flight rating, never flies without an airband scanner, GPS, and transponder, and stays well out of controlled airspace. Also spends a lot of time looking over their shoulder nervously and tries not to fly through clouds in air traffic corridors.

Remember: there are old dragons, and bold dragons, but in the age of 250 ton jet airliners flying at 500 mph there are no old, bold dragons!
