It appears our ISP is having problems right now, so #tilvids is down. Estimated downtime is roughly 4 hours. Apologies for the inconvenience. In the meantime, feel free to visit our mirror at https://cdn01.tilvids.com
As some of you know, I often will reach out to creators I find on YT to see if they'd be willing to share their content with the #tilvids community. Occasionally, I'll find one who makes content that perfectly fits our edutainment mission, but they just have ZERO methods of contacting them. This is one of those times. If you know of a way to get in touch with "The Science Elf"...please steer them in our direction! I'm a sucker for a good TI-calc video... :calculator:
Not a new blog post, but a recent poll by @vkc made me think it would be timely to re-post the latest blog entry on the #tilvids blog, because it talks a lot about the future direction I want to take TILvids in. Worth a read if you want my take on how I'm hoping to navigate #decentralization & #federation while also attempting to build a community that is scalable, ethical, and as fair as possible to everyone involved.
This is why every content creator should be looking at their YT exit strategy. The best platform is the one you control. That's why on #tilvids our goal is to help creators get off the ground, and then help them transition to their own instance, one that they can drive in ways that make sense for their goals. And as long as those goals still align with our mission of edutainment, we'll federate with all our "TILvids graduates"! 👏
I just got done chatting with a creator that I invited to share on #tilvids and while they were interested, they ultimately decided not to because they didn't want to detract from what they were doing on YT. As a creator myself, I completely understand, but this is why it's so important for everyone in the #fediverse community to reach out to creators and encourage them to share on #PeerTube The message coming from their viewers is so much more powerful than some random instance host. 💙
Good for you! The more creators leave YT, the more they signal that they don't control the world of online video.
At #tilvids we're focused on edutainment content, which is to say, a mix of educational and entertaining. If you think that describes most of your content, feel free to let us know and we can make some space for you.
The past month has been an expensive month for me personally, paid for my gf's drivers licence and festival and currently my personal funds are quite low
Server bills will be paid ofc but I'm worried it will drain my last personal funds😟
Before I start selling some of my personal stuff I wanted to ask the Fedi first.. :catblush: ❤️
This is definitely something the fediverse is going to have to figure out. I would bet most instances are having to dip into personal funds to cover costs (I certainly have to over at #tilvids ). If people want to live in a world without pervasive ads, there is a cost to it.
You have some awesome content Matt, and it's right in alignment with our goals for #tilvids We have a focus on edutainment content, so your videos would be a great match. Most of your videos look like they're about 15-20 minutes in length, which is not a problem at all. I also try to help promote creators on #mastodon to get the word out over here, and we have a secondary mirror instance to help with performance.
Welcome @freetechproject to #tilvids ! We're always happy to give some space in our community for projects that are working to spread the good word on #foss
Please check out the @freetechproject channel, and be sure to Like, Comment, & Subscribe so you don't miss the latest content!
Not a surprise to see some of this starting to happen. It actually makes sense for corporate entities to start their own instances of #Mastodon for sharing out information and building a network of followers that can't be capriciously switched off when some billionaire decides they no longer like you. 👏
Good on you @BBCRD Now how about a #PeerTube instance for your online video presence? I know a guy, if you're interested... 💙
Hello! If you're making edutainment content, and interested in sharing it with the #tilvids community, feel free to hop on over to our #Matrix chat room. The community/mods will take a look at your content, and if it works within our mission of edutainment, they can give you upload access.

A great opinion / intro article about #federation from @eugenialoli over at #OSNews. Definitely worth a read and a share (not the least of which for the #tilvids shout-out as a @peertube instance) :mastodon: :pixelfed: :peertube: 💙
This is a major factor into why I chose to focus on edutainment for TILvids, why we curate our creators, and why we are going to have a very selective #federation approach. Other instances (and services like Odysee) have tried the approach of having almost no limitations on the type of content allowed, and it almost always leads to the same types of toxic outcomes.
I have no interest in #tilvids falling into this same cycle.
I saw this comment on an article posted on @arstechnica about #YouTube increasing their price for YouTube Premium. And yes, YT does need competition, the problem is most creators want their content to be seen, and hopefully get compensation for the effort involved in making the content, and #Google simply has the cash and gravitational presence to make it happen.
If you want competition, start supporting alternatives, and letting creators know that you won't be watching their content on YT. 💙
Bummer to hear that! Our main #tilvids instance is based in the EU (Germany) which was very slow to load for our US viewers. To help that, I started a second redundancy/mirror instance at https://cdn01.tilvids.com to help cache some of the content closer to "home". In my experience, it helps quite a bit (newly-posted videos take about an hour to cache, and definitely load slower in the US until it happens).
What locale are you in? We can definitely consider more mirrors in the future...
Indeed. The best thing you can do is reach out to those creators on Mastodon and tell them that you won't watch their content on YouTube out of principle. When I reach out to creators to join #tilvids I don't even recommend they leave YT, just that they join an instance and automatically sync their content. It's not lost revenue because most of the viewers on Peertube are leaving YT anyway. There's pretty much no downside to the creator at that point.
We've gotten some requests lately for #tilvids to expand beyond tech content from the community. While we're limited to the creators who choose to join us, I'm happy to say we do already have some on board, and I'll introduce some of them over the next week.
To that end, let me introduce you to @bigcar a channel dedicated to telling the interesting history of #automobiles 🚗
