An #Ontario#university is the first major educational institution in #Canada to reach an #agreement with on-campus protestors and vows not to invest in companies benefitting from the war in #Gaza.
Ppl with no history of activism for accessibility suddenly being concerned about ADA violations when it has the effect of quashing a group they want to suppress. UC itself has used this tactic in the past.
Abled-led progressive groups not thoroughly considering accessibility issues not just to head such tactics off at the pass, but to actually be accessible.
A poster was shared on social media to promote the protest. A description of the event said protesters were "delivering a message to #McGill administration that we refuse to stand by quietly while they remain complicit in #genocide."
Both #faculty and #encampment members took issue with how the president directed blame for those incidents, with the former saying it could hinder meaningful dialogue and the latter saying they’re being #scapegoated.
The faculty group on Friday said they’re around the encampment almost 24/7 and they’re concerned the information coming the #university “does not align with what most of us have seen first hand at the encampment.”
About 20%.
"UC investments in entities with ties to weapons makers, #Israel, #Blackrock, #Blackstone and 24 other companies targeted by divestment proponents amount to about $32 billion of #UC's $175 billion...
Utrecht University’s board has promised to “reasses” its ties to the Zionist Entity. We recognise this message for what it is: a tactic to placate the masses, keep us silent while the death toll rises to over 45,000 people in Gaza.
We have stated our demands time and time again. However, the university remains insistent on being complicit to genocide and would rather call the riot police on its own students and staff, rather than stand on the right side of history.
Come and join us in demanding an end to our University’s ties to apartheid and genocide. Bring whatever resources you can, as much food and supplies as possible, and join us in the streets as we take back our university.
🇵🇸 In our thousands, in our millions, we are ALL Palestinians. 🇵🇸'
:solidarity: 🍉
'For the third time, Utrecht University has chosen to send in riot police against its own students and staff rather than sever ties with an apartheid state.'
« … we urge the University administration to grant complete amnesty to any students faculty staff and community members facing disciplinary action for engaging in peaceful protest… »
"A review of CalMatters video from inside the encampment documented at least 25 instances in which those officers appeared to aim their weapons at the eye level of protesters or fired them into crowds that didn’t appear to present an immediate threat to life or serious injury… Law enforcement officers across the state are trained that these types of munitions 'shall not be aimed at the head, neck or any other vital organs…'" https://calmatters.org/justice/2024/05/ucla-protest-palestine-police/
If you're a University of California worker who's a member of UAW 4811 (the new union composed of the former 2865, 5810, and SRU), check your email box for a link to a vote on strike authorization due to UC's unfair labor practices.
According to my information 4 out of 5 student encampments are allowed to stay the night! 🎉 Only Amsterdam was evicted, more about that later. Preview: outside agitators, not Antifa, escalated things. Probably same folks as earlier (nazi hooligans). 💤
