Hmm, the "pets" on my backyard camera are strongly neophobic. Won't approach my (live) traps with peanut butter in it. We'll see how long it takes them to give it a try. Tip: do not bait with birdseed, because you'll catch a billion quail and bunnies (over and over and over again). Likely I'll catch a native packrat (which will be let go, as they don't nest in homes. Roof rats and Norwegian rats don't get the same treatment). #rats
Every once in awhile you read an article that is like "Wow, that is a kick in the head," and for me today it was this one in the Washington Post on organized groups of people in my home city, the U. S. capital, who take their dogs out rat hunting at night. I was not aware this was a thing.
Please send all good vibes to Morty, going in for removal of Mystery Lump.
Tell you about old Mortis. Hairless fella. Came to us two years ago wild and deranged. Only rat of ours to chew through a playpen wall. Doesn't get along with other rats. Bit me severely. Today: a People Rat. Our best-behaved rat. Likes hanging out. Keeps enclosure meticulous, everything in place. Rings a bell for attention. Sat still for the X-Rays.
We say this a lot, but he is really and truly a very good boy.
Ils sortent enfin et j'ai pu sentir leurs petites patounes :meow_uwu_cry:
Même le plus craintif est sorti et maintenant ils font que des conneries dans et devant la cage
"In a world at war with the rat, a defense of the enemy might seem hopeless. Yet the second reason to mount that defense is that there is new evidence in the rat’s favor. A growing body of research paints a picture of the accused that is far less vile than has been portrayed, and that may even charm the jury. "
Loved the most recent This American Life about #rats, with a special focus on the rats of #NYC, and how their explosive success here lies hand-in-paw with the city's surprisingly recent habit of straight-up piling huge mounds of garbage bags everywhere all the time. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/801/must-be-rats-on-the-brain
I've gotten so used to seeing the scurrying, squeaking gyres swirling around my feet when I go for my evening walks that I forget that not everywhere is like this. #Podcasts
This was shortly after bringing home our very first #rats from the shelter, beautiful Sebastian and Rocky. They were scared, and we didn't know each other yet, and we had no experience at all with rats! They each had the most luxurious fur, and a lot to teach us.
It's been rough, but Morty is finally pretty much recovered from surgery. No more cone, no more bandages, no more forced meds. He's his old self again -- minus the jumbo sized mystery lump. Good job, Morty, we knew you had it in you!
It feels like we really bonded during his recovery. Now, no more lumps🤞
Today is the first anniversary of Zack and Taro's gotcha day! A whole year since we adopted these little troublemakers after Reiji's sad passing.
Looking back I can't believe how tiny they were! I mean, Taro is stil smol, but these photos are proof that even he's grown quite a bit! :blobcatinlove:
I'm sponsoring the adoption fees for all the #rats at the #Denver Animal Shelter. They are babies, but growing up fast. They've lived in the shelter their whole life, and it's just not a great environment to grow up in! There are currently nine boys and one lone girl.
Maybe you can give them a good home, or pass the word along? Rats are intelligent and affectionate companion animals. These little ones deserve better, and are going to need some extra love. 💕
