#Media#News#PressFreedom#Journalism#Assange#Wikileaks: "I know Assange is in some ways a problematic figure, though I will always defend the work we did together when I was editing the Guardian, on the Iraq and Afghan war logs and the diplomatic cables. I get why the defence of him from the wider journalistic community has been somewhat muted.
But I know they won’t stop with Assange. The world of near-total surveillance, merely sketched by Orwell in Nineteen Eighty-four, is now rather frighteningly real. We need brave defenders of our liberties. They won’t all be Hollywood hero material, any more than Orwell’s Winston Smith was.
But I agree with Albanese and his crisp message to President Biden. Enough is enough. Set him free."

#Germany / Let our journalists go [and tell the world what they’ve seen in Gaza]
[…] German state broadcaster ARD on Friday said Israel was blocking two of its long-term Palestinian workers from leaving Gaza, where they fear for their lives, citing security concerns the broadcaster said did not make sense.
#PressFreedom / Why did IDF assassinate journalists Hamza Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya? 3 different versions within 4 days tried to hide the obvious truth
#IDF doesn't know who they're targeting. They kill and then make up a story about "terrorists". But targeting journalists, clearly marked as such, seem to be a priority. #Israel is also among the top jailers of journalists worldwide, as acknowledged by CPJ recently. https://kolektiva.social/@oatmeal/111806150045046433
Israel gave several shifting explanations for the killing al-Dahdouh and Turiya:
Initial IDF statement was that they were killed while accompanying a "terrorist" who was operating a drone that threatened Israeli forces.
Later, an IDF spokesperson statement was that they were using a drone in a war zone which is problematic, but it is unfortunate they were killed.
Even later, the IDF statement changed again, this time claiming that "intelligence" shows the two were active members of #Hamas and Palestinian #IslamicJihad, who had just operated drones threatening Israeli forces before being targeted.
This tortured interview with #Hasbara operative Eylon Levy leaves no room for doubt. Israel is lying and has been lying to international media about almost everything they agree to comment on in respect to the arbitrary killing of Gazans.

Pay attention to what's happening in this case: the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just essentially ruled that it's fully legal to jail journalists for reporting leaked information, or any information they obtain from government officials without going through "proper channels."

#israel / Israel among top jailers of journalists worldwide, as imprisonments globally continue unabated, CPJ finds
“Our research shows how entrenched authoritarianism is globally, with governments emboldened to stamp out critical reporting and prevent public accountability. Meanwhile, Israel’s standing in CPJ’s 2023 prison census is evidence that a fundamental democratic norm—press freedom—is fraying as Israel exploits draconian methods to silence Palestinian journalists. This practice must stop,” said Jodie Ginsberg, CPJ’s chief executive officer.

[…] Given the ongoing devastation in #Gaza, CPJ expects that additional funding will be necessary and is regularly reassessing the needs of journalists in order to coordinate and respond accordingly.
"Public trust in the ABC is being undermined. The organisation’s reputation for frank and fearless journalism is being damaged by management’s repeated lack of support for its staff when they are under attack from outside."
"Journalists at the ABC – particularly First Nations people, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds – increasingly don’t feel safe at work; and the progress that has been made in diversifying the ABC has gone backwards."
