Today in Labor History May 20, 1938: 500 unemployed workers began a sit-down strike in the Hotel Georgia, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Unemployed men had been drifting to British Columbia during the Depression because of the milder climate and relatively better pay in the forestry camps. In early ’38, the government had cut grants to the provinces. As a result, many of the relief camps shut down and jobs dried up. In response, protesters occupied the Hotel George, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the main post office beginning on May 20. They were led by communist organizers. The owner of the hotel refused to call the cops, fearing major property damage in the melee that would ensue. So, he bribed the men to leave. However, those in the post office and art gallery remained for weeks.
The conflict culminated on Bloody Sunday (June 19), when undercover Mounties brutally beat strikers in their attempt to evict them. 42 people were hospitalized, five of whom were cops. One striker lost an eye. Those who evaded arrest, along with onlookers and supporters on the outside, then marched to the East End, smashing windows. They caused $35,000 damage.
Ever since we first hit the #debtceiling in January, I have been concerned about this crisis. Some of my mutuals have said that the #US#government wouldn't bring this crisis far enough to collapse itself, but I foresee that we are too late as we are 12 days away from a potential #default.
If you have money in the #bank, I would suggest that you take it out and put it into non-liquid assets before the #US#dollar looses its purchasing power. Yes, it could cause more #bankruns, but I feel that now is the time before more of us go into #poverty.

I’ve often complained that when the US “ended welfare as we know it” (in 1996) no one kept track of what happened to the people who were on welfare. How many lost their apartments? Became drug addicts? Went to jail? Died?
There’s no doubt in my mind all of these things happened as a consequence. But we’ll never know the numbers. People with money and power didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want to know.
@jrefior Eh, most were disabled and as such it's actually decently tracked, as to what did & has kept happening, namely that thousands per year have died while waiting & wading through the process of attempting to get SSI & SSDI approval.
These "requirements" did indeed add to the work farming of poor people but didn't really begin it and definitely are a display of how our bureaucracy murders disabled people legally.
