openSUSE needs to get their act together

Since 2022 it has been implied multiple times by the openSUSE Development, that openSUSE Leap was being discontinued. Then they said it wasn't being discontinued, but replaced. Once more, they said it wasn't being replaced, simply changed. Now lastly, they're saying it may remain, but either in 1 of 3 forms

Ever watch a TV network kill off a good TV show, because the new executive does not like it, but the fans keep hanging on?

Some #OpenSUSE Leap impressions:

  • Nice to not have an "Install EPEL" first step!
  • Getting up and running with container tools (podman, etc.) was nice and quick (no need for adjusting systemd linger for non-root)
  • Interesing that the cloud image doesn't ship with #btrfs by default
  • No SELinux by default and a little bit of effort to piece it all back together - no default policy even
  • zypper is... OK. dnf's search is definitely more comprehensive.

is it possible to compile your own #sles? Or #ubuntupro?

#opensuse doesn't appear to be a bug for bug replacement and #ubuntu only has 5 years of LTS, with 10 if you pay...

This is a genuine question, I can't find any talk of this when discussing #redhat code drama the last few days

#hmm

Fun fact: #OpenSuSE Leap and #SuSE SLES peacefully co-exist while sharing the same public source code.

Seriously. — It is 2023, nearly 2024, and when I say, "mailing list" do you have warm and fuzzy fillings, inspiring you with confidence?

Oh do you imagine "spam" and more "news letters" filling up your inbox?

They really should call it something else.

It could be much more obvious how to publish images in OBS' web view. #SUSE #OpenSUSE

I need an excuse to use #OpenSUSE Tumbleweed for something. #Linux

Looks like depending on how you install it, #wicked is sometimes the default instead of #NetworkManager on #OpenSUSE Leap.

I wish / would just enable out of box for non-transactional variants. is comparatively slower/clunky and there's not a clearly unsolveable issue with their mutual co-existence.

Should I distro hop my work (!) machine to Tumbleweed (and fight with its lack of polkit setup and "hurr durr durr just use the root password" attitude),

-- or --

Should I make a fair attempt at troubleshooting the problems I'm having with ?

I'm getting some strange behavior with , , and .

My login (selecting Plasma Wayland session) dumps me into an Xorg screen with 3 xterms. I then have to 'sudo systemctl restart sddm' and log in again...etc..

Check In - #2YearLinuxChallenge #OpenSuSE #Linux

Still going very strong. May in fact be considering becoming an OpenSuSE shill.

A #NewYears resolution idea for some of y'all:

Make 2024 the year you move to an immutable #Linux, like #Fedora #Kinoite or #Silverblue, #OpenSUSE #Kalpa or #Aeon, etc.

I think I will start a thread here as a sort of diary.

Starting at #FrOSCon, I have started to try #openSUSE on my laptop. As a #Debian Developer, I felt reluctant to try something else, and Debian is a great project.

However, as I am teaching openSUSE at Linuxhotel, I thought I should maybe get more familiar with it 🤣. Also, I had already fallen in love with #zypper.

If you are keen in following the pros and cons I discover, take a seat!

Do you want proof that Wikipedia is not always 100% accurate?

This photo is a lie. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Linux_Distribution_Timeline.svg

It would have you wrongfully believe, Red Hat Linux came 1st. It did not. Furthermore, it goes even further and tries to claim that SUSE didn't step onto the stage until 2 whole years later. 🙄

It's been added and removed so many times that it is laughable.

I really get annoyed that RPM packages are not commonly supported and that converting a DEB package into an RPM isn't always straightforward or guaranteed.

Check In #2YearLinuxChallenge

Still going strong. #opensuse is awesome. Still loving qtile and but I've been thinking about trying out a new WM this week. Probably won't be Wayland.

I always forget that the kvm/qemu pattern on #opensuse is broken.

Does anyone have a really good #opensuse ASCII art? I've tried some of the generators and even ChatGPT, but none of them are very good.

Installed Plasma on #Opensuse this morning for shits and giggles. I'm guessing that by the end of the #2YearLinuxChallenge I will have all the DEs and all the WMs on my system.

@linux Sharing a 'small' inconvenience I had to fix with (I suspect is the same) - I couldn't launch snaps (spotify, bitwarden) after update - error was: cannot determine seccomp compiler version in generateSystemKey fork/exec /usr/lib/snapd/snap-seccomp: no such file or directory

The fix (I first tried re-installing, didn't work) was to:
a. locate snap-seccomp - was in /usr/libexec/snapd
b. symlink: ln -s /usr/libexec/snapd /usr/lib/snapd

I'm as intrigued by #Guix as I was by #NixOS, but ultimately I'm not sure the complexity is worth it for me.

Even #OpenBSD has a ratio of complexity vs. benefits that fits well with my work (and play) flow.

#AtomicFedora, #UniversalBlue and #OpenSUSE #Aeon all hide enough of the nitty gritty behind the scenes — updates happen without me needing to know it.

And traditional #Debian is so familiar and reliable, it's hard not to tap it for just about any use case.

2831 packages to update on #opensuse this time. That's an update. woo boy.

Well. Seems I have to reinstall . I tried restoring as many of my custom theme settings as I could remember before retrying to upgrade to . It didn't help. Colors being screwed I get, but why are so many things are straight up missing. Volume widget? BT widget? Whole sections in the Plasma Settings are just gone. ???

Plasma 6. Dark theme broken, widgets and option sections in the Plasma settings are missing.
