The thing I wonder is if I could move my #threads following/follower graph over to a Mastodon instance and still get the bang for the buck I get on Threads. Discovery is much easier over the there, but it lacks the kind of focus you can get here.
@budgibson@medium But there is so much more they could do. Why is it that you get more value from Threads instead of me.dm server?
It's because of algorithms. It's much easier to find the people and content in Threads because it turns out algorithms are great things. If #Medium did compete earnestly, they would start to do way more, like discovery algorithms, support comments of posts via ActivityPub, and ditch this geeky default UI... the reason why you and many others prefer Threads.
I've always said that the #fediverse was vulnerable to corporations in the long run.
What I hadn't bargained for was the willingness of the most informed people, particularly instance admins to be oblivious or complacent about this danger, and for so many here to literally welcome federation with malevolent corporations like #Meta / #Threads and #Medium.
#Fedi is the lifeboat but #p2p will be the shore folks.
Very soon in Flipboard I will be able to follow @Gargron who is on Mastodon and @mosseri who is on Threads and @dansup who is on PixelFed. And I will be able to see, like and reply to any of their posts. And they will be able to see my replies and follow me from whatever app they're using. And anyone else who is following one of the three of us will be able to see our activity from whatever app they're using in the Fediverse. This is how things should be.
@mike
It's about more than connection. It's about content too, and most of all culture. There are many reasons to exclude #Threads, #Medium and their like.
Most of those reasons are why the fediverse exists in the first place and why many people came here.
That so many, especially admins and indeed Eugen ignore them is a mystery to me. They make #Meta's job so much easier than it needs to be.
My statement on the #resignation of both the President and the Chair of the Board of Trustees from The University of #Pennsylvania - also known as #penn
Elizabeth Magill and Scott Bok stepped down over the weekend due, primarily, to their failure to address the rapid growth of #antisemitism on Penn's campus.
I welcome all civil responses here or on #medium for those with accounts there. Uncivil responses will be deleted and users blocked.
It is 100% hilarious but it never occurred for me to mirror my content to #Medium until @justin wrote this.
As a reader this makes a lot of sense as I can financially support as many authors as I can with one payment. I wish more #Substack writers will consider mirroring their content to Medium so I can help support them.
I am an unashamedly sentimental and earnest person, and I genuinely mean it when I say just having anyone read a word (even you disagree!) means more to me than anything monetary. It's moving to know there are others who resonate even slightly with my musings! That also helps me feel known and located 💚
hey, everyone!
my name is Forest, and i’m new to #mastodon. i’ve used it before but recently made this account on the #Medium instance. i’m an avid #writer, #photographer, and #tarot reader, so feel free to reach out for a reading! i’m still on #X under the xktober username but we’ll see how much longer i last.
anyway, that’s just a brief #introduction!
Some quick questions about this quote from the article: "Flipboard has joined (...) companies, including Mozilla, Tumblr, and Medium, that are using the ActivityPub protocol" How are Mozilla, Tumblr and Medium currently applying AP? I heard that Tumblr planned to do so, but with the current re-planning going on over there, I would not be so sure anymore. And I have no clue about thje other two and their ways of implementing it. Someone? #mastodon#tumblr#medium#mozilla#activitypub
I've been taking it easy from #mastodon for a while. A kind of #socialmedia overload. I'm here more often than I post, but I'm still here. I'm just focusing on my writing. I've opened a new newsletter on #substack called The Taoist Corner, and it's going pretty well, I feel. I enjoy reading without wondering if my post is going to be #boosted on #medium. I do, however, like the money on Medium. Everything is a give and take, right? https://thetaoistcorner.net.
Think you can't get sued for putting real people in your fiction? Think again.
On @medium I give 5 tips that may help you protect yourself, drawing on the wisdom of Authors Guild lawyers and my work as a fiction-writing teacher. Rule 1: No, you can't "just change names."
New article about boosted #fiction on @medium! Did you know that Medium has a list of examples of boosted stories, with details on why they were chosen for the #boost? Check them out!
