I know it looks like an old #iceFishing shelter, and it still is, sort of. But I havent set it on a #Minnesota lake for 12 years, not since my son with #autism reimagined it into a private club house where he could set the rules and do what he wanted. And then, he converted it into his workshop where he built high powered nerf guns. And then into a chicken coop that produced more eggs than we could give away to neighbors. And then into a woodshed because he loved bon fires. It is still filled with perfectly dry logs he harvested and hand sawed.
I didnt always encourage his ever changing interests, but he didnt need me to. If he was interested enough in a project, he made it happen.
Raising an #autistic kid with relentless energy was hard, but really rewarding. But I still have a lot of cleaning up to do.
15 minutes after starting ice fishing with friends today, my phone fell off my lap and directly into one of the holes we had augured out. The kids had a great time but I spent most of it kicking myself for not putting the phone back in my pocket. #fishing#icefishing#stupidity#phone#lost
Anecdotally, it feels like #Minnesota DNR's slot limit and higher catch allowance on smaller pike, is working. At least on our lake. We are regularly catching pike over 30 inches long, where a fish that size used to be really rare here.
We put this one (and another) back in the water after a quick photo. Eight smaller pike are tonight's dinner, which is more than enough yet well below the 10 each of us could possess.
A fishing shelter has broken through the ice today on our lake in NW #Minnesota. Rain and warm temps have made lake ice dangerous. Typically, this time of year, it should be 24 to 30 inches thick.
Remember the #iceFishing house that fell through the #Minnesota lake that I posted a picture of? It was recovered this weekend by a diving team. So, in my 2000+ posts here, I have never posted a link to FB, but I will make an exception today. The divers posted a series of photos and explain step by step how to recover a distressed fish house. I found it fascinating.

@Dogrunkennel Yes, ice conditions vary widely. A week ago, on the lake where the house fell through, there was 5 inches clear, 4 inches white ice. Im glad for this sub zero cold spell, but its awefully late.
I heard about Red Lake. I didnt think it fair to charge the fishers for the rescue, especially given the access wasnt closed.
Its 50F in NW #Minnesota. The ice is not solid, so I am #icefishing near shore over shallow water. No way I'd take a vehicle or snowmobile out on this honeycombed slush. How's the ice where you are?
Hubs went ice fishing today at a small pothole lake about 20 minutes west of our place. Big worms on the hook to make sure the little chubs don't bite. The small lake is stocked with fish...limit is 5, but hubs usually keeps 1 or 2.
Tiger trout is a hybrid of Brook Trout + Brown Trout.
#IceFishing and #winter recreation season is finally upon us!
Remember that the DNR does not measure ice thickness on #Minnesota lakes. Your safety is your responsibility. Learn about the different ways to check ice thickness before heading out.
It wont last, probably, but its exciting to see thin ice forming in a calm shallow channel between lake basins. Another month and we will be out there #icefishing, my favorite #Minnesota passtime.
