Great story in this week’s #GoodTimes#SantaCruz, “I want my mp3”, about a couple of computer science students and music lovers at #UCSantaCruz in 1993 who used digitization and data compression, both in their infancy, to create the IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive). This was way before Napster or anything else. Today, if you search for IUMA on archive.org you will get 45,000 hits. #music#internet
But, at the end of the day both are #evil in that they destroy the #environment equally effectively. The China model does it through command and control efficiency gains. The American model through sheer profligacy.
I remember when Instagram switched to a non–reverse-chronological, algorithmic timeline, and all the users kept pointing out to Instagram that they didn’t like it, as if Meta did it by mistake or had anything other than withering contempt for them. #GoodTimes
@tantramar It's cool they've got a study saying users prefer algorithmic timelines - when you define "prefer" as daily engagement and exclude all sentiment metrics.

@deaththeman wow, what an adventure. Back when I used to have a motorcycle, I had to pull over once to do jumping jacks and pushups to warm up, and that was in Northern California! I can barely imagine how you’d stay warm on two wheels in Eastern Europe in the winter…
Made it home safe and sound and younger brother got back home without issue. Good to be home with hubs again. ❤️
I got everything unpacked and the MacBook Air I could not get to connect with Mama’s wifi reconnected here without trouble.
Nephew came by and hung out for a couple hours and that was really nice. We talked and had some laughs. #GoodTimes
