What is the breakthrough? The first hint that you can actually make energy. No viable reactor, no actual technology, just a research finding of the hint of a start (that cost many billions already).
What is the NIF? "The NIF was designed not as a power plant, but as a facility to recreate and study the reactions that occur during thermonuclear detonations after the United States halted underground weapons testing in 1992."
So, more hype to up funding for nuclear weapons passed off as an energy "breakthrough" that, even if true, is decades from even coming into the potential for construction.

Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant (a former US legislative assistant) has proposed new safety standards that necessarily compromise end-to-end encryption. Digital services are forced to break encryption and snoop on your content, in order to comply. How will the back doors remain accessible only to the "good guys"? Our safety codes should not sabotage the technological backbone of our society.
Fusion members and friends are signing a joint letter to stop this sabotage.
Writing it here for posterity: Hydrogen will be the most common, powerful, universal portable battery systems used in vehicles (all), robotics, warehouses, and industry at-large within the next century (sooner for wide-scale adoption).
Unless something similar, more powerful, and safer comes along, that is what our portable electrical needs will be focused on.
For wider scale "grid" electricity, it will be modular nuclear (fission, fusion) reactors.
Virgin is on strike and Qantas is granted a protection racket.
If only Australians would vote for an alternative, high speed rail would resolve the high costs of air travel.

Our young Aussies are banding together to call on the government to lower the voting age to 16, they demand a voice to be heard and a vote.
Daily, the government's choices affect everyone, even those under 18, in distinctive and meaningful ways. The 16 and 17-year-olds of our generation are increasingly involved in politics, seeking a voice in decisions shaping our lives and future. Unfortunately, politicians disregard them due to their inability to vote.
By 16 we can work full time, pay income tax, serve in the army, drive a car, get married and be charged with criminal offences. Our youth have the right and the capacity to be heard, to shape policies that affect our lives, and to be an integral part of our democracy.
Reducing the voting age recognizes the national and global crises that young people are confronting and will inherit. Whether it's the climate emergency, housing, or education, the youth are already facing these challenges firsthand and disproportionately.
Thriving democracies rely on increased participation. Throughout history, extending voting rights—from men without property to women, Indigenous communities, and 18-21 year olds in the 1970s—has consistently bolstered democracy. Extending voting rights to 16 and 17-year-olds in Australian elections and referendums will similarly enhance civic engagement and democratic strength.
Many other countries like Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Scotland and Wales have already lowered the voting age to 16, and New Zealand, Canada and Germany are following their lead. It’s now Australia’s turn.
Fusion supports lowering the option to vote to 16 years, while the obligation to vote would not begin till 18 years. Electoral education and civics would also be introduced to the high school curriculum to help our youth make educated and informed decisions.
The major parties are teaming up once more to hinder minor parties and independents. We support campaign finance reform, but it should be fair, benefiting everyone, not just the majors.
As spring lingers and summer looms, Australia can't afford to gamble with fire and emergency preparedness, we are already experiencing more bushfires. The recent bushfires and floods from summer 2020–21 still in our minds exposed our government's shortcomings.
