Is it me or is Denmark 🇩🇰 really representing this #FollowFriday
It’s #NewstodonFriday — such a shame it’s been a slow news week! Just to refresh your memories, this is a day to feature work from newsrooms with an active presence in the #Fediverse. If you like what you see in the (long!) thread below, follow the profiles and boost their stories. If you’re a journo or newsroom that we don’t know about or if there’s a newsroom you’d love to put on our radar, please let us know in the comments below.
Three astronomy undergraduates at MIT and their professor discovered three of the oldest stars in the universe. @gbhnews interviewed them about the field of stellar archeology and the “cannibalistic process” of galaxy growth.
@damemagazine covered the rise of the “trad wife” influencer — where it come from, and why it’s dangerous. “A 2022 Ipsos poll found that almost half of American men surveyed believe “traditional masculinity” is under threat. Many blame feminism, saying it has done more harm than good. One in five Gen Z and Millennial men now believe violence against women is often provoked by the victim,” writes Sarah Stankorb.
Angelman Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects around half a million people worldwide. Here’s a story from @thexylom about the potential for a cure, and the barriers families in Hong Kong must overcome to access it.
Solitary confinement is classified as torture by the UN and is a war crime under the Geneva Convention, yet more than 500 people have endured this for a decade or longer in Texas. Damascus James created “Texas Letters,” an anthology and book series featuring the unedited writings of people who have spent months, years and sometimes decades in isolation. @TexasObserver has extracts from the second volume here.
San Francisco’s mental health care and detention system is under enormous strain. Here’s a story from @SFPublicPress about the vicious cycle that occurs as distressed people fall through the cracks in the system.
Our @NewsDesk created this Flipboard Storyboard on what happens next for Trump — whether he has grounds for appeal, how the verdict will impact the election, if he might go to prison, and the ludicrous Republican response to his conviction.
Bruce Springsteen might be the biggest naysayer of all when it comes to giving permission for politicians to use music for campaigning. As “Born in the USA” turns 40, @TheConversationUS breaks down why this is one of Springsteen’s most misunderstood songs.
What’s your perception of a gig worker? Most are relatively young, but @restofworld spoke to 50 who are aged between 50 and 75 as part of its Graying Gig Workers series. Maureen Zephora Khumalo from Johannesburg, South Africa, told Rest of World that friends laugh at her for doing a young people’s job, but “with harsh economic conditions and my children out of jobs, I [may] even work until my eighties because no one can give me money for free.” https://restofworld.org/2024/aging-global-gig-workers/
In the tradition of #FollowFriday, the two best pieces of writing about the Trump conviction are both on Talking Points Memo, which is subscription-based and in my opinion provides probably the best available progressive-flavored coverage of US politics. I’m recommending you subscribe so you can read
Since it's #FollowFriday#FF it seems like a good opportunity to announce that I'll be streaming on OwnCast. Follow @OwnChris to know when I'm going live.
#FollowFriday I recommend @IrishMECFSAssociation if you are interested in studies and #research about #LongCovid#MECFS etc. They provide international informations.

Is #followfriday still a thing here on Masto? Only asking because there's a few accounts I follow that really deserve a plug and don't have many followers... obviously I know it's only Tuesday... 😁
