"UPS announced this week that they will be laying off 12,000 people, approximately 2.4 percent of their global workforce...
As you may recall, UPS drivers won a hard fought battle earlier this year for higher wages and less batshit working conditions so they don’t die of heat stroke.
Is the company truly suffering? Well, no. It still had an adjusted operating profit of $9.9 billion... they “returned $7.6 billion of cash to shareowners through dividends and share buybacks".
At the same time the company is laying off workers, the board of directors approved — for the 15th year in a row — an increase to the company’s quarterly dividend. This means that people are getting laid off, but shareholders are getting a raise."
#GOP says no need for new #immigration laws. That’s not what it used to say.
#Republicans are sandwiched between what many of their #Senate GOP colleagues say is a critical opportunity to pass #conservative#border#legislation & the #political wishes of a former president who seems to view the crisis as a boon to his 2024 campaign.
& increasingly, they’ve landed on a talking point: We don’t really even need new #laws.
•“A #border bill is not necessary to stop” the flow at the border, #Trump said Mon. Trump added Wed morning: “CLOSE THE SOUTHERN BORDER, NO BILL NECESSARY!!!”
•“President Biden falsely claimed yesterday he needs #Congress to pass a new #law to allow him to close the southern border,” #House#Speaker#MikeJohnson (R) said over the weekend.
•“We don’t need a border bill,” Sen #TedCruz (R) said late last week. #GOP#immigration#Politics#exploitation
•“We don’t need new laws — we just need a president who enforces the laws we already have,” #KristiNoem said.
•“We don’t need a new #law to secure the #border; this crisis would end instantly if Biden just fully reinstated the Trump policies,” Sen #MarcoRubio said.
•“We don’t need a new bill; we need something to get Biden to enforce the law,” Sen #RickScott said. #immigration#Politics#exploitation
•“The idea that you need #Congress to do something to secure the southern #border is just all horse manure,” Rep #TroyNehls (R) added Tues.
This argument would have been news to some of these same #Republicans just a few years or even months ago. Many saw a border “crisis” even under #Trump’s leadership — & the need for laws to address it. #law#immigration#Politics#GOP#exploitation
#Trump, too, saw #legislation as a necessity back then — his own powers apparently insufficient to stem the tide.
“The only long-term solution to the #crisis, & the only way to ensure the endurance of our nation as a sovereign country, is for #Congress to overcome open-borders obstruction,” TFG Nov 2018.
In July 2019, Trump pointed to some of the specific legislation #Senate negotiators are working on now: changing #asylum laws, which Trump labeled “archaic.”
… #MikeJohnson has also said repeatedly in the past that #Congress has a major role to play — even a singular one.
In 2018 & 2019, he responded to the #border “crisis” during #Trump’s presidency by calling for Congress to close “loopholes.” He introduced #legislation to reform the #asylum process, which he labeled a “critical step.”
In Feb 2023, Johnson stated flatly that “our #immigration system is broken. Reforming that system is a job for Congress.”

@larsmb The way employers treat essential workers in Europe is just as bad minus the fact they get “bonuses” such as paid vacation and such. We in Europe just love to act delusional and to tell ourselves that “at least we are better than the Americans”, which is such a low bar to be honest.

Across Southeast Asia, interest in German is on the rise as the German government taps increasing numbers of the region's skilled workers to tackle the country's severe labor shortages.
@Anibyl the worst about it: developed countries take advantage of well-educated specialists in their respective fields from lesser developed countries > it's lesser developed countries which would pay for the education, not rich countries like germany

Toronto lawyer Louis Century of the law firm Gold Blatt Partners filed a Statement of Claim on behalf of Kevin Palmer, a Jamaican who worked at Amco, and former Tilray worker Andrel Peters of Grenada last month.
The Attorney General of Canada faces a half-billion dollar class action filed by two migrant farm workers who say their Charter rights were violated under the Seasonal Agriculture Workers Program and the Temporary Foreign Workers Program.
Palmer said he first arrived in Canada in April 2014 on an eight-month contract and worked for Amco for six years. The father of two worked with chemicals, and while safety equipment was available, he didn't receive training on how to use it. He continues to worry exposure to those chemicals has hurt his health.
Amco terminated Palmer's employment in October 2019. The company allegedly posted a notice in the workplace. He said Amco never paid him for working overtime, and although he paid into Employment Insurance, he was denied access to the program.
The action alleges the Canadian government has received $475-million in EI contributions from foreign agricultural workers over the past 15 years.
The action states that European workers were never vulnerable to the same abuses because their work permits were not tied to specific companies.
