Inspired by @howard 's recent post sharing his #elfeed configuration, I'm sharing mine. Elfeed is a powerful RSS feed reader for #emacs with a number of hooks to customize it.
Scratching my head at an Emacs issue: Elfeed-org doesn’t seem to load my feeds. I’m not sure why, everything looks OK. I have my feeds.org and I have the path defined in rmh-elfeed-org-files and it does show the value it’s supposed to have.
We are very very excited to announce that 404 Media now has full text RSS feeds for our paying subscribers!!! Get your feed link here and learn more about why and how we did this:
Decided to set up and get going with #elfeed so I enabled rss from my Doom config, set up a small #orgmode file with a couple RSS feeds I'm interested in, and then loaded it up. Discovered I didn't compile #emacs with libxml2 support! Easily fixed by heading over to my use file for Emacs, adding a flag to enable compiling libxml2 support, and then re-emerged the package.
Now that I’m finding it harder and harder to scroll through the entirety of my #Mastodon feed every day (too many posts, too less time), I have taken to subscribing to the RSS feed of some accounts I’m particularly interested in.
My feed reader (Reeder5) pulls their posts and saves them for me till I have free time, typically once in a week, to go and read them. This works even if the server removes their old posts. I feel like this a secret trick not many know about.
Turns out #Emacs#RSS feed reader, #elfeed, provides very powerful filtering and scoring rules. And, with the #elfeedProtocol package, you can connect it to your #Nextcloud News feeds. This is going to be very handy!
I've forgot that efi system grub rewrites everything. I remember when I had bios mbr grubs I could just press esc and then second grub on another disc would show up, it was easy. Now I've spent some time trying to boot my work system using guix, gladly it was quite easy thing to do.
RSS is definitely making a comeback. I've tried a few aggregator apps and I think I've concluded that I do prefer just getting an email when there's a new post to read.
Feedrabbit has been great (🇦🇺!) but before I pay to add more feeds, what else is out there that people like for RSS-to-email?
I will hopefully try to build my own as an AWS Lambda, too, but that's not a short-term thing.
I used to listen to #podcasts through Google, then through Spotify, then Spotify Lite, and now I just love listening to them raw through #firefox and the RSS feed (#elfeed on my pc, #feeder on my phone). There are tradeoffs -- can't share as easily, don't have playlists of them, can't cast. But I also don't have things getting paused accidentally by the service or by others on my account (there are no accounts at all!), and I don't need to worry about things tracking/sharing my listening data. At least, not for podcasts. It's the way podcasts were meant to be!
I’m slowly spending more and more time inside #Emacs thanks to #mu4e, #elfeed, #mastodonel, #pdftools, #dired and quite a few other packages. I still haven’t hopped on EXWM full time, I really only use it on my Chromebook, and I can’t use it at work, but being able to do pretty much everything just with the keyboard really is a blessing!
@dekkzz76 Yeah, Invidious is good in that regard. And provides better feeds, by the way.
The problem I had is that Invidious instances tend to be somewhat unstable, and changing an instance in #elfeed is not great because it will duplicate the videos.
