When I stopped my weekly routine, I also stopped organizing tasks. Now I have one big file mixed with personal and work tasks, some active and some complete. It’s an intimidating blob of “stuff,” and just looking at it makes me want to run away to a video game instead.

When should I visit my projects file and move things out into their categories? Second, what are these categories?

@joel how's something like this instead of just links? Better?

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel making you happy is one of my goals ☺️. But also seriously, this is good feedback. It requires a bit more work on my end (manual vs automatic) but I think I can automate some parts of it.

I've updated my Microsoft Edge notes after working with it for a couple of weeks. If you use Office 365 for work like I do, here's a tip: Maximize (but don't go full screen!) when working with Edge. Read more in the full article linked above.

For Emacs org-mode users, two tips in two new notes: linking to other org-mode headers and plain lists to checklists in org-mode.

@joel It's interesting to go back and see what attracts people, where they come from, what they use... isn't it?

I wanted to tell you about analytics if you haven't heard of it: https://tinylytics.app, that's what I use.

It's run by a single guy from Micro.blog (though it's independent from the platform).

I believe it's still free (donation-based), and has "old school" features like kudos and reader count, allows you to go back in time to see past months as well, among other things.

Photoshop has excellent selection tools that leave Gimp in the dust for me. I wonder what other free photoshop-replacements are out there (foss even better)?

Specifically needed for selecting objects, like trees and pets and people, and put into other photos.

Scratching my head at an Emacs issue: Elfeed-org doesn’t seem to load my feeds. I’m not sure why, everything looks OK. I have my feeds.org and I have the path defined in rmh-elfeed-org-files and it does show the value it’s supposed to have.

Does anyone have a working config I can look at?

Today's head-scratcher in #linuxmint and #emacs. Hope someone can help me understand this. I've got both W10 and LM installed on my machine. While in LM, using dired in emacs, I can navigate through all of my linux directories. However, the file manager in LM shows a Windows directory, and I can see and access a lot of my W10 files (though not my Documents folder). Why is that? And how can I access all my Windows documents in LM? TIA!

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@birv2 I'm not sure I'm following all of that - you're saying you see your Windows files in LM with the file browser, but not in Dired?

Also, I assume you have a dual-boot setup?

If the above two are true, keep in mind that the structure of the folders in Linux is different than what the LM file manager shows you (for example, you can see another hard drive, but it's actually under /media/user/...).

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@birv2 poor example on my part, that path example is too specific.

Can you see the folders in dired after you use LM file manager? The windows partition may not be mounted automatically and if you navigate there with file manager, it will mount it for you.

Copy the path from LM file manager and try to open it with find-file in dired: see if it works. Save the path as a bookmark in emacs, assuming it does; log out or reboot, try to go there without visiting with LM file manager first.

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@birv2 my hunch is that you will need to play with your fstab a bit

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@birv2 depending on your setup in Windows, your document might not be a "real" folder maybe. I vaguely recall some OneDrive shenanigans

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@EdHamilton @birv2 Yes, once you disconnect OneDrive from the computer (under options, "unlink this PC"), the folders should become "normal" and physical folders again.

But in any case, let's not make this about OneDrive... I will not stop complaining 😅

@joel nice looking home screen. That. pack of icons is also nicely done, though I prefer something that is a bit more distinguishable (but I see how it fits).

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel I saw… installed it. Curious how hard it is to add an icon and how

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel yep i use Nova

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel lol no i mean i need to create a new icon the app doesn’t have one in this set.

jtr, to edge
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

Getting used to Edge again means trying to duplicate some of the productivity tricks Arc gave me.
Having a collection of work-related tabs in one accent color is nice, and being able to customize their icons and rename them is also important. Here’s what I have so far. https://gitlab.com/taonaw/taonah/-/blob/master/public/20240416T085958--customizing-edge__microsoft.org?ref_type=heads&blame=1

jtr,
@jtr@fosstodon.org avatar

@mykhaylo I get this tickle that they're not going to be around for much longer.

Because it's hard to export bookmarks out (because of the unique way arc deals with those) I need to kind of start fresh, so I need more time.

Also, arc is the "official" one for work, and since I do a lot of writing for work, might as well see it there.

Apple Watch newbie question: Do I have to press the side button twice before I pay to go into transit, or is there an option without it? On the iPhone, you can

@martinpeck @farcaller well well, look at that.
