NEW EBIKE! https://youtu.be/vmD87w2Z_QU
Partnering with Velotric to road test their new cargo bike and this thing HAULS! Like, literally. It's not just quick, it actually hauls a lot of gear.
Here are my early thoughts on the Velotric Go 1!
#Luna sells some special #ebikes and motos, and the Ludi X2, which bridges the two, might be the best example of that. They took the Class 3 500W-rated #Bafang M600 Motor that advertises 120Nm of torque and are pumping more than quadruple rated power through there, sometimes up to 2500W.
It's really awesome that most mastodon users agree that we should do something about #ClimateChange. Now, most of you are city dwellers, and half of urban GHG emissions are from #transportation (half of all car trips are under 3 miles), so what are you doing about it? Step 1: at least try to get somewhere without a car (like if #eBikes existed) so you can see how bad it is, Step 2: yell at your public officials (and fix your city/state voting method).
There's never been more choice in the electric bicycle market than we now see, and #ebikes are a great way to #decarbonize your #commute, reduce #congestion and improve your #health to boot!
But how do you go about choosing a good one? We've got you covered!
@ascentale A7 #BikeNite I think every charger needs to have a temperature monitor via the plug, to inside the battery case. Though I don't want proprietary connectors, the same two-contact barrel plug for everything from 12 to 48V is clearly bonkers. IDK if there are studies on the common defect/incident type but a conservative temp limit should prevent most fires that could occur while charging (many #eBikes BMS might already limit that internally). Smoke detector is probably a good idea.
Heard today at the platform that #escooters are banned on #UK#trains but #ebikes are not. This seems to be due to the recent highly publicised incidents of the scooters catching fire. Can't the same happen to ebikes?
Feels reactionary to me. We should be encouraging more electric options for transport not less. I hope this is temporary.
Whoops, who would have guessed that a company running on venture capital and selling over-engineered #ebikes you can only control from a smartphone app would fall apart? Don't buy a #VanMoof bike, folks (if they start selling again.) And if you already have one, well, you're probably fucked. Only a matter of time before it gets bricked by the company when their app shuts down, or when it breaks and you can't send it in for repair (proprietary parts means normal bike shops can't do anything for you). #cycling#biketooter#CapitalismSucks https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/10/vanmoof-the-e-bike-darling-skids-off-track-sales-paused-execs-depart/amp/
Tire and brake dust means your 4000lb #EV will generate as much emissions as a small gas car, or more!?
"Some companies are experimenting with more sustainable tire sources, such as dandelions" 🙄 anything but #eBikes, right. #climateWishing#motoNormativity
I just rode my bike 15 minutes round-trip and came back with spicy noodles from the food cart in Hillsdale. #eBikes make streetcar suburbs into #15minuteNeighborhoods
I guess I will post my #introduction now that I have moved:
Hi, I'm John! I'm a 30-something trans man. I'm married to my lovely wife, Nicole, and we have two #cats, Bebe and Oscar (both girls). I like #ebikes, #hiking and #art. I use #LinuxMint because I'm a n00b, and I'm an #Episcopalian. My current main fandoms are #Hermitcraft and #TheLockedTomb. I've enjoyed my time on Mastodon so far, and I'm looking forward to more fun!
Hey! It looks like a lot of people are doing #introduction and reintroduction posts because of the ongoing exodus from other social media.
I don't go by my real name on here, and I prefer not to give any pronouns for the sake of anonymity- refer to me however you like! My avatar is
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind from the film of the same name. #SolarPunk
I toot a lot about #SolarCooking because it's a free, zero pollution way to cook that is ideal for summer cooking because it doesn't heat your home or strain the electric grid. And it's fun! I'm looking to test the boundaries of weather and seasons for solar cooking in my region.
I made my own #SolarOven / #SolarCooker out of free materials (cardboard boxes from the recycling, plastic bags, a scrap piece of clear acrylic) and some cheap supplies that tend to get used once and thrown away. (Glue, tape, aluminum foil). Pics attached (I've made two of them so far!)
People ask me sometimes for plans, and I usually direct them to the Solar Cooking Wiki. https://solarcooking.fandom.com/wiki/Solar_Cooking_Wiki_(Home) That's where I learned most of what I know now (plus my own first hand experience). If you like paper books, Cooking With Sunshine by Lorraine Anderson is an excellent reference. I'm also in the process of writing a zine about solar cooking that I'll distribute for free once it's done!
All the food I make in the solar cooker and otherwise is #vegan because I feel strongly that it's the fairest and most sustainable way to eat. I also focus on making real food from scratch (especially #beans and #bread) to show how useful the solar oven is. It's not an Easy Bake Oven! (Though I have baked a cake in it).
I also toot and share stuff about the #ClimateCrisis, #veganism, #urbanism#ebikes and #libraries, among other things... It's all linked together. I want to be part of a fair and sustainable world for all people. Proud to be an anarchist, #NoGodsNoMasters#NoBordersNoNations
Decarbonising road transport - Lighter vehicles make a big difference
"Currently, a large diesel SUV typically emits a kilogram of CO₂ for every 3 kilometres of driving, compared to 15km for a light electric vehicle and 200 kilometres for an e-bike. An average electric vehicle currently emits 1kg of CO₂ every 7km."
"Australia is on track to miss the net-zero target for 2050 mainly because of the large proportions of fossil-fuelled vehicles and large and heavy passenger vehicles."
Nice #edgerunner long tail #cargoBikes#eBikes to get with your rebate, for those in BC. The rest of us will have to spend tens of thousands to get and keep an old-fashioned #EV 😒 with our govt subsidies.
Q6. A good friend is finding themselves in the office for work a lot more often these days. They are looking for a convenient, low-maintenance e-bike for a multi-modal bike->train->bike/walk trip. They'd either take their bike on the train or park it in a bike locker at the station. Do you have any recommendations?
@szeis4cookie@ascentale how much does a brompton weigh and cost with a motor? I've seen 40lb single-speed folding #eBikes for ~$800 but a bulky/clumsier fold and 250W -- that's enough for most hills if you're sub-120lb but at 200 you have to pedal that last 80. Motor top speed ~15mph but 20in wheels ride fine to 25+ (some with 12in wheels + short wheelbase probably get exciting ~ 9mph 😬 )
@ordinoides@CelloMomOnCars@ixtility I think the underappreciated climate benefit of #eBikes, is how they open your eyes to the infrastructure problems, and build political will for giving bikes priority on our streets (there's plenty of funds, we just spend it keeping too many car lanes open for free.) Once you catch up to a driver a second and third time, you realize they're all doing 20mph at best. All extra space given to cars, beyond the most essential access, will be wasted and noisy.
