The city system at each end of the is as much a part of the as the service itself. If you get there and require a car for , maybe needing to take slow, infrequent to an airport on the edge of town to get a rental, the train has lost its edge vs in time, if not expense. Taking a folding bike on the train is an okay workaround for some, ridehail/taxi activity at train stations suggests a need for bikeshare +

How do e-bikes compete with the other modes of transport? Investigating multiple dimensions of a modal shift https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23800127.2024.2332006

@kim_harding will replace cars if we let them: " must make e-cycling as well as cycling safe, efficient, and attractive at the scale of the urban region. Electric assistance cannot compensate for the lack of cycle ways. ... must be thought in combination with other modes (walking, public transport, carsharing, ) to make it possible to live car-free… planning should aim to regulate urban sprawl and promote more compact development to avoid automobile dependence"

Somehow, was out of carts. I don't know how that happens. There were people waiting at the entrance, trailing other people to their cars to grab their carts.

"No sweat," I told the security people at the store entrance. "I brought my own cart."

Same bike, but this time the shot from behind the rear wheel. A black pannier hangs from the rear rack. The bike frame is white, with a blue box on a black platform. A hailong battery sits atop the platform. Same groceries in the box.

Who has $9k to spend on and wants to try this? With the motor and (in the rear wheel), front suspension, cable steering, should be quite the ride (caveat really steep hills vs 130lb bike with hub motor in 26in wheel, you need to keep some speed up and probably need dual batteries, but you can check on the ebikes.ca motor/trip simulator vs your actual hills.)

If your EVs aren't selling maybe that's because you're making giant fucking trucks and SUVs and hyper-expensive luxury sedans and the kind of people who want EVs mostly just want a compact car for getting to work and running errands.

Just sayin'.

@tess The affordable, efficient, small most people want is an and/or which use 1/100th the amount of and other -intensive resources, costs less to own two than one year of car expenses, don't have to give up your old gas car yet, no worries for or grid-scale crisis about charging infrastructure. All we need are Engineers who don't fruitlessly waste every inch of city streets on cars, and some transit priority lanes instead.

Does anybody know of a better umbrella term than "non-standard bicycle" for all bikes that are not the "standard" shape? So including bikes/trikes, and other but also etc

Some ideas if nothing exists already:

  • altercycle
  • laterocycle
  • pretercycle
  • teratocycle
  • nothocycle

I want language to talk about how storage infrastructure doesn't include bents, cargobikes, trikes, etc.

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@xtaran @bicripple the "Ordinary" was the bike with a large front wheel and fixed pedals, and then came the "safety bicycle" with the triangular frame. In any case, Extraordinary seems not to be a great or very correct term for the non-safety bicycles (also not a great term) so I'm no help. 🤷 I tend to just mention or as two kinds of atypical cycle that need to be considered in . At least that covers extra width or length consideration, sorry tallbikers.
