The other day, talking about issues on the fediverse, @mekkaokereke proposed an (apt) analogy which led to a tangential conversation about racism in Boston. I noticed, as I have whenever this comes up, a curious thing about what “Boston” seems to represent in the public imagination.

That’s a smaller population than I thought. I thought maybe a half a million at least but I guess not.

Interesting piece. Judging from these figures, you'd assume that by the end of the century Australia will be welcoming a lot more migrants from Africa, in order to bolster the working-age population.

The planet's population will get to 10.4 billion – then drop. Here’s when we reach peak human

#ElonMusk, in an interview commenting on his 11 children, noted that society’s biggest threat is, as he described it, “Population Collapse”. This seems to be a mantra of Silicon Valley tech bros & gurus, including a lot of bloggers and podcasters - it’s like the holy grail - and it is so backasswards wrong on all levels that it is simply stunning anyone believes this. I know the economics involved, but in the age of robotization and automation, this is simply BS. These idiots (who all consider themselves geniuses entitled to lead the way) NEED to maintain the status quo at all costs for their models to work and their billions to be protected; when what the planet and the human race needs is downsizing, less resource extraction, less travel, reduced emissions and fossil fuel use, less globalization and more local ecosystem development. It’d be a short-term burden for some, but #PopulationCollapse would save the planet and the human race in the long run. #Population #PopulationTrends #Demographics #Extinction

2025 represents a very important year in US demographics. 2025 is 18 years from the great recession, and every single year since that date has seen a near continuous decline in US births.

That means, every year going forward, there are going to be fewer students going to colleges, few recruits for the military and fewer workers for employers. This is not a small thing coming very quickly.

A new report by the World Health Organization says governments need to start investing in preventing poor health in old age now as Europe's population ages.

Europe's population is ageing rapidly; next year it's estimated that people older than 65 will outnumber people younger than 15 and habits and attitudes need to be adjusted accordingly.

Romania's demographic decline damages the economy.

With a population of 19 million, Romania is sinking into a worrying demographic decline. Over 5 million Romanians have left their homeland, searching for a better life in Western Europe.

Meanwhile, companies investing in the country struggle to recruit workers.

Putin's demographic failure in Russia.

The continuing decline of the Russian population since 1991 is becoming an issue in the run-up to protracted fighting in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin has to rely on the mass mobilization of his citizens – revealing the immense and long-standing fragilities of Russian demography.

In July, the number of births fell back to 1945 levels.

Jonathan V. Last writes,

"I have written a lot about demographics and natalism. Here is an uncomfortable fact: Do you know who else is really into natalism? Racists and weirdos."

And this is EXACTLY why I tend to turn a deaf ear to the dire warnngs of people like Jonathan V. Last, a self-professed right-wing Catholic, about "demographic winter," with their implied chastisement of (white) women for not having babies.

When I was a kid in the 80s, was notorious for huge, overcrowded schools, and they built to meet the population. Today, it seems that same population (or larger) no longer has kids. Makes me wonder if these are boomer still in same homes. Really curious about the (esp age/sex pyramids) for this area.
