The Far Right’s Campaign to Explode the Population >>

"The threat, we are told here this weekend, is existential, #biological, epoch-defining. Economies will fail, #civilizations will fall, and it will all happen because people aren’t having enough #babies.

“The entire global #financial system, the value of your money, and every #asset you might buy with money is defined by leverage, which means its value depends on growth...." >>

Japan's efforts to revitalize rural areas through various incentives has yielded limited results as people continue to gravitate toward urban centers. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/04/27/japan/society/regional-revitalization-population-decrease/ #japan #society #population #regionalrevitalization #birthrate

The UK's #birthrate has been below the nominal replacement level of 2.1 #children per mother for around 50 years....

So. its time we had a more sensible discussion about the role of #migration in maintaining the #workforce levels we need to sustain the economy, the role of 'encouraging' people back into #work & how we can support children & mothers.

Its a trite phrase, but what we really do nee is some 'joined up thinking'; in these areas its been somewhat absent

Fewer Koreans are getting married due to rising costs of weddings and apartment rentals. In this context, the decrease in marriages may be the leading cause of the country's falling birthrate since most couples only have children after marrying.

Just something I found #interesting today:

"More monks than porridge" used to be a metaphor for the limited places in public kindergartens in #China.

But the tide is turning!

A document is floating around in the #Chinese #internet sphere, showing enrollment numbers in kindergartens in #Chengdu City (Sichuan Province), that shows some places with 0 enrollment.

The #birthrate in mainland China has fallen to 1929 levels in the last 6 yrs!

The reasons are identical to those everywhere else.

What exactly is the “crisis” with Japan’s low #birthrate? Could it be that population growth and economic growth are “connected”. Neither can continue on a finite planet.
