I took these photos of a brown bear and her cub while they were salmon fishing at the mouth of the pictured river near to Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido, exactly 4 years ago to the day.

I only had my iPhone X at the time and they were a good 200 metres or more away so I improvised by putting it up to a pair of binoculars, to act as an impromptu telephoto lens.

The same scene photographed through the lens of a pair of binoculars. A circle of visible area occupies most of the photo. It is a magnified view of the very mouth of the river. A patch of sandy, shingled beach is to the bottom and large rocks to the top. Standing on all fours on the sandy beach on the left of the visible area is a large brown bear. She is looking towards her cub who is standing on all fours in the shallow water of the river mouth and looking back towards her. The image is partially washed out and there are areas of chromatic aberration due to the imperfection of the binoculars as a makeshift telephoto lens.

I really love watching the young of all species as they have so much curiosity, joy, and innocence. This brown bear sow had two cubs of the year. One more independent, and this one that always seemed to be right by her side, usually looking to get anything that was in her mouth into its own mouth, whether it be sedge grass or clams. In Lake Clark NP, we had to accustom ourselves to the fact that the bears are more concerned about clamming than they are about us humans.
