Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is an audio format, data is compressed with no loss of information or quality.

FLAC is a format option for archiving audio collections such as CDs.

Ripping a CD to FLAC allows an exact copy of an audio CD to be created if the original is lost or damaged.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

As the saying goes, "Real BOFH use tar and rsync!"

The blog article is an excellent treatment of using tar along with SSH to effect a reliable backup plan and schedule.

Another couple of great fav GoTo solutions of mine have always been Duplicity and Duply for those not comfortable rolling their own scripts w/SSH, tar, and/or rsync :batman:

Thank you very much for sharing this @nixCraft !!!

S U C C E S S ! ! !

I deleted enough images that I was able to create and download an archive. Woot. Worked at 180 MB on my instance.

My Masto account is now backed up!

Well, I've deleted a lot of my media storage. Mostly anything extraneous from the beginning of this year. I am attempting to get another archive, but I'm guessing it won't work because my media storage is 180 MB. It does not work, I will be deleting my images up until April and try again. I've been particularly ruthless with my live photos which become GIFs on this site and take up a lot of storage.

@sfwrtr@eldritch.cafe avatar

if you want to delete media without search.

  1. Tap media tab on your profile.
  2. Scroll through media thumbnails and click image.
  3. At bottom of displayed image find and tap an icon that looks like an expand button. In the tangerine skin, it looks like a box with an arrow to the upper right.
  4. Edit the post with the media, then delete it or whatev. OR...
  5. If media isn't shown, it may be further down in an associated thread. Scroll until you find it.

Happy time deleting images and video that prevent you from downloading an ActivityPub archive. Beats using has:media search term!

Have you done your backups recently?

Considering to change my #backup solution from #duplicity to #restic (Not sure yet, I like having #pgp keys for encryption, but it's not like a long password stored in #PasswordStore wouldn't cut it). Since restic supports Windows I might try moving a couple relatives onto it; Makes helping them easier if I know the software. For them however, a #GUI is likely a MUST, but what I've found so far is not too encouraging: restatic (dead), npbackup ("metrics" and other assorted niggles), resticguigx (Electron), backrest (browser-based, which makes my skin crawl for security tooling)... Does anyone know other options I missed? Or has some compelling arguments for those I mentioned?

It's nice when you write a #SQL #backup script and monitoring and inventory comes out of it. Also, nice when it works when you deploy it.

Now to build the monitor to monitor the monitor so we can alert when the monitor doesn't monitor the monitor... The rabbit hole of monitoring.

The 3-2-1 rule is a data backup strategy.

3 copies of the data.
2 different types of storage media.
1 copy located offsite.

Consider protecting each backup with encryption.
Consider "Harvest now, decrypt later" when selecting a storage location.

In sostanza:

  • L'oblio.

It is the "world #backup day", at least according to WorldBackupDay.com. I like the idea of having such a day, to serve as another nudge and a reminder to make and check backups, though WorldBackupDay.com is awkward, does not mention rsync in its software section. The "com" TLD looks suspicious, too, but it is better than nothing (except for potential private data leaks with online backup services).

I use primarily encrypted external HDDs (#ZFS or #LUKS with #ext4) and #rsync for personal backups, including rsync with "--dry-run --checksum" for scrubbing and checking before synchronization; quite happy that such tools are available, even though they are usually taken for granted, as are many other neat FLOSS tools we use regularly. Planning to add a USB stick to the list of storage devices, since it should be less fragile mechanically (even though less reliable otherwise).

I have a NAS that I use to backup my devices. Now I want to periodically backup that NAS to some cloud storage.

There would be many uploads and very rarely (hopefully never) downloads. So uploads and storage should be cheap, but it's OK if downloads are expensive.

What software and host/cloud providers do you folks recommend? I want to encrypt the data before uploading.

Got a bit turned around searching for off-server cloud backup options.

Where do people do this? To some kind of static/cdn type service like S3 or Spaces? To a second VPS? To cloud backup services like Dropbox/Drive/Etc?

Was hoping to use the client's existing DropBox account which has lots of storage.

Went down a rabbit hole but then found Rclone (cloud wrapper for Rsync) which looks like a good fit. Got a proof of concept working. 👍

Had a rock solid system for a few months now. However, today I started a #pika #backup and left the house. When I came back, the laptop seemed fine and Pika reported a complete backup. A few clicks later, however, the machine abruptly rebooted, reported several EXT4-fs errors with bad block bitmap remarks, and finally froze. I don't know, but sometimes #linux seems pretty fragile. ☹️
