"Last year I switched to something new. This is the Lua programming language. It's implemented in just 12k LoC, it's extremely easy to build from source and it's quite fast. It's not as popular as Javascript or Python. As a result, it doesn't tend to get used in products of conquest that try to be all things to all people."
As I’m about to start renewing and expanding the computer fleet in my house I decided I want to have a machine solely for my personal use, where I can use some solutions no one else will feel comfortable with in the house....
@qyron Maybe look at #e16, #openbox, #fluxbox, or #awesomewm, as they will be completely usable without any pre-configuration. Those will all give you a pretty well rounded feel for the comparison of window manager vs desktop environment. All are quite easy to hack on and decently documented. The appilcations menu for e16 should be auto-generated on first login, both openbox and fluxbox will most likely need to be generated manually, and awesome should just be ready to use as-is.
#PulseAudio was starting to work somewhat reliably, so the fd.o people decided it was time to break everybody's setups again by moving over to #PipeWire which is a drop-in replacement except when it's not, for example for everybody using pacmd.
On an unrelated note, I just finished adapting my #AwesomeWM audio widget to use pactl (which requires multple popen calls to get the current state) instead of pacmd (that allowed the entire state to be retrieved with a single popen).
@minicx What's the reason for installing a DE alongside #AwesomeWM? Is it just for a file manager, terminal, etc? Could be those are better installed separately vice a whole DE for a few programs. There also may be similar programs that suit your needs that are not part of any DE.
@thelinuxcast on most of my recent #Linux installs I just have #XFCE. My wife has a few on her laptop as thay was the first computer we switches to Linux, this it has been our testing unit. I knownit has #KDE, XFCE, #AwesomeWM, #Openbox , #I3, #Gnome, and I think #Budgie
Edit: oh my little mango pi is rocking XFCE, #LXDE, and Openbox
@cnx In the world of editors, I keep going back to #vim. I'm just so used to it. evil-mode does a great job, but then there's customizations that I already have working in vim, but not #emacs.
I did make a drastic change in my desktop setup, though, I'm running #KDE with #AwesomeWM now. I also found some library to make Awesome's tags (supposedly) work like #XMonad's tags. When this laptop gets to the office with additional monitors, I can see if it makes true on that promise!
Window Managers for the un-initiated
As I’m about to start renewing and expanding the computer fleet in my house I decided I want to have a machine solely for my personal use, where I can use some solutions no one else will feel comfortable with in the house....
Which DE would be a better fit for awesomeWM?
I want to build a void linux based system with awesomeWM window manager...
