Working in is not healthy for my mind. After almost 2 years I honestly regret config is not written in :blobCat_paw:

I'm guessing that is because a lot of DevOps orchestration and config is in #yaml - correct?

I've considered using #awesomeWM just to get better with #Lua

"Last year I switched to something new. This is the Lua programming language. It's implemented in just 12k LoC, it's extremely easy to build from source and it's quite fast. It's not as popular as Javascript or Python. As a result, it doesn't tend to get used in products of conquest that try to be all things to all people."

@matthew yes, I use everyday… in ! This one also doesn't get the love it should, heavily overshadowed by i3 and stuff.

Now, to develop on it…

eshep, to linux in Window Managers for the un-initiated

@qyron Maybe look at , , , or , as they will be completely usable without any pre-configuration. Those will all give you a pretty well rounded feel for the comparison of window manager vs desktop environment. All are quite easy to hack on and decently documented. The appilcations menu for e16 should be auto-generated on first login, both openbox and fluxbox will most likely need to be generated manually, and awesome should just be ready to use as-is.

#PulseAudio was starting to work somewhat reliably, so the fd.o people decided it was time to break everybody's setups again by moving over to #PipeWire which is a drop-in replacement except when it's not, for example for everybody using pacmd.

On an unrelated note, I just finished adapting my #AwesomeWM audio widget to use pactl (which requires multple popen calls to get the current state) instead of pacmd (that allowed the entire state to be retrieved with a single popen).

eshep, to linux in Which DE would be a better fit for awesomeWM?

@minicx What's the reason for installing a DE alongside ? Is it just for a file manager, terminal, etc? Could be those are better installed separately vice a whole DE for a few programs. There also may be similar programs that suit your needs that are not part of any DE.

What window managers/desktop environments do you have installed?

Am I the only one who has more than one?

I have:

xfce4
qtile
bspwm
xmonad
dwm
openbox
icewm

Maybe a little excessive?

People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse.

But a meme is just a meme.

In the real world, Linux dominates.

Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux.

Chromebook? Linux.

Windows has a Linux Subsystem too.

Linux has won.

The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it.

The Fediverse should be so lucky.

@atomicpoet

People would be LUCKY to discover the many desktops Linux has available

#GNOME #KDE (#Plasma) #XFCE #LXDE #Unity #i3 #awesomewm #ratpoison #enlightenment whatever #system76 is cooking up

that doesn't even cover the file managers, terminals, IDEs, browsers, media players, games (so many games!)

of course, I'm the crazy one for suggesting any of this.. But I've only used Linux desktops exclusively since ~1998, so what do i know?!
🤷

No matter how much I play around, I seemingly always come back to #AwesomeWM.

tyil,

@cnx In the world of editors, I keep going back to #vim. I'm just so used to it. evil-mode does a great job, but then there's customizations that I already have working in vim, but not #emacs.

I did make a drastic change in my desktop setup, though, I'm running #KDE with #AwesomeWM now. I also found some library to make Awesome's tags (supposedly) work like #XMonad's tags. When this laptop gets to the office with additional monitors, I can see if it makes true on that promise!
