I've been told that Mastodon and the Fediverse will never catch on (as in get to the point people know what it is / use it).

Tell me a reason you enjoy Mastodon / The Fediverse.

❓❓❓
Can someone tell me what this is?

Today my son found a small box hidden under some stones under a tree somewhere in the fields.

It contained a stamp device, one large and a small pin and a chestnut (see images attached)

The stamp impression shows an owl sitting on a tree and some text that looks like usernames from the 2000s.

So, what is it what he found? Are we now in some sort of cult? 😬

🔁 Boost appreciated! 🙏

Hm. Is there a renderer that can do "display foo.md beautifully in the terminal, and highlight whatever source line 123 contained (which is almost certainly not output line 123)"?

I have a collection of Markdown documents and would like to run full-text search on them, e.g. using , but I don't want the results to be displayed as raw Markdown, but instead be rendered in the terminal, but still see where the result is. Any ideas?

I probably need an alt where I can (respectfully) gripe about all the nonsense.

Trying my best to reign it (or at least lie to myself about feeling positive) on Fosstodon results in not saying much at all... Of course my apologies to the 2 people worldwide who actually read before ;)

Anyway, can my friends of the fedi recommend any particular instances?

Do you have anything like that?

Have there been any exciting updates to the range of Mastodon apps lately? 🤔

I feel like a lot of app development - on iOS especially - has either slowed or halted, but happy to be proven wrong. 😅

I’m really looking forward to @ivory introducing the ability to ‘Browse other instances’. 👽

Not sure if this will reach out to anyone who can answer, but I've been learning a bit about the protocol, and it claims to be better against censorship and muuuch simpler that . However, what are the downsides of Nostr, compared to APub? Less censorship = more bots? Simpler protocol = lacking good built-in defences against unknow threats, or something like that?

A friend and I were chatting on what we would do if we were leaving a company on bad terms and wanted to leave a bit of a timebomb for our future replacement. So what would you do?

Not suggesting you do any of this but just for the sake of a bit of fun.

I think I would go manually update all the database tables that uses incremental id's and change the sequence to be fairly close to the max the table's column would accept. Subtle, slow and a big headache to deal with down the line.

I am pretty sure there was like a website telling you how much industrial sabotage your had to do to cancel out your carbon footprint. Does someone have a link to that?

I know there are infinite options, which gives me some decision paralasys, but how would you automate/smart a boring USB input switcher? It should be pretty simple just putting a relay across the current remote button, but would be nice to replace the button and use the LED outputs as feedback on which input is selected.

Are there still ways to view posts made to people on Twitter? I absolutely do not want to sign up, or even the site get a hold of any identifying info (public library internet access is good for that I suppose).

I'd like to track down a specific source posting to a specific person.

Best offline android (phone) games for kids aged 3.9 and 6? They don't need to be educational, but they have been enjoying Reading Eggs.

The 6yo has also been enjoying SuperTuxKart, but can't keep his attention for more than 1 lap.

I have a question for people with better theoretical background on and especially for developers.

Is the following pattern known and does it have a name?

I have a number of classes (call them C1, C2, etc) that all derive from the same class B. I have a superclass (template, actually) D that derives from C1, C2 etc. To have a single B, the standard solution is to go with virtual inheritance to close the diamond (so far, so good).

My audio VM works generally well (even great) except for one problem:
Live doesn't see the content in shared folders.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this? Note that the guest OS (win) can access normally everything in the shared folders, and it's only Live that doesn't (without errors or anything).

So anyway, here's my of the day and it'd be great if you could boost for visibility since the -> -> -> crows is... tiny?

Recording and editing yoga offerings for online yoga classes. I am struggling with the level of vulnerability required to put oneself out there on the internet. Is Steamdb's tags page relatively comprehensive for the tags used across Steam?

If so I'm kind of surprised that Grindy isn't a tag on there. I'd like that to filter out those games, and those that love them could more easily find'em. Win-win!

The indieweb is pretty amazing!

While you can already use the @pixelfed API to syndicate to your Pixelfed account from your own blog

Wouldn't it be cool if you could syndicate from Pixelfed to your own server or even 3rd party service using webhooks and param placeholders so you can build the perfect webhook (example.org/api/webhook?caption=$caption&image_url=$mediaUrl) where $caption and $mediaUrl are populated by the backend

This is something I will pursue if there is interest!
