What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

Dear friends,

@bookstodon #amreading etc. Here is my Tentative reading list for 2024. I am for 12 novels a year, but life, writing, my family, it can all get in the way. For '23 I read 12 things, but they weren't all novels, so thats a half pass. The list:

Any sequels I'm up to (3 trilogies in this case), lotr i read recently but I loved it so much I'm thinking of doing it again. Dispossessed was on 23s list.

Have you read any of these, what's your take? Any suggestions or definite 'don't read that!'

Cat tax, Elspeth hiding behind a Christmas tree. A naughty torti up to no good.

Huh. It just occurred to me that not everyone reads all the time. Like, there’s a bunch of people without books they’re reading right now. That concept is so bizarre to me. I’ve always got several books going. Ebooks, audiobooks and physical copies of books. If you don’t read anymore, when and why did you stop? No judgement. I’m genuinely curious. @bookstodon

My 2024 reading thread is below!

Book 1: On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden

5 stars

Stunning art, lovely found family, and a fun sci fi setting, all while managing to strike the perfect balance between cozy and yearning.

Hey bookish folks, I'd love your help! How do you find new-to-you books to read?

I'm trying to figure out where to advertise my books now that I have a fourth book out ( https://buy.bookfunnel.com/vxvlyi6b0v ). I'm rather unknown so can't spend big $$ but it's hard to know where is best to find readers. And yet, it's hard to have a budget without readers, too!

So here is a question to the @bookstodon community: what is the best book you have read this year?

In her description of the 'arrival' of Alleyn, Ngaio (the g is NOT silent, folks) Marsh unintentionally highlights why I love Allingham's Campion. For him, tempus really did fugit, at more or less real pace.

A #Linguistics question prompted by "Crime Wave at Blandings", the first story in "Lord Emsworth and Others, which I currently #AmReading. PGW has Lord Emsworth saying "dooce" a lot. In my quasi-literate ignorance, that seems like an Americanism, the sort of thing PGW might have picked from living there. Would a very English Earl of the era have said "deuce" as "dooce" , or would he have been more like to say /djuːs/ ? @bookstodon

After I finish a book that's a bit of a slog (or, most recently, DNF), I like to treat myself with something awesome that I can really dive into. Yesterday for a palate cleanser, I decided to resume my stalled re-read of the Dark Tower series with Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower 5) by Stephen King. Mr. King is ridiculously reliable when it comes to providing something good to read. #Books #Bookstodon #AmReading #FridayReads #StephenKing #TheDarkTower @bookstodon

Cozy mysteries?

I’ve read & enjoyed Still Life by Louise Penny, does that count? I recently found this book, The Thursday Murder Club & it was called a ‘cozy mystery.’ Do you all have any recommendations, do you like this genre or am I’m just 100 years old?

i #AmReading Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and it's soooo gooood! i usually listen to audiobooks before bed and i get sleepy after 15-30 mins. not with this book, i do not 😁 it's so packed with action and drama and dragons and danger and daggers pew pew pew (why does everything start on a D? 🤔)

i appreciate especially how cool the protagonist is with her sexuality and body, and she has flaws, how refreshing 😁

anyway, check it out, it's fun!

I didn’t know that there is a series of Dune books.

Are the movies based on the book “Dune” or the entire series?

I was going to buy the book tonight, now I’m not sure I want to commit!

I admit when it comes to knowledge of Peter Straub's work, I am lacking. I know of him thanks to his collaborations with Stephen King (The Talisman, Black House). When Straub passed away last Sept, I felt I had missed something by not enjoying his writing while he was still on this earth.

Many said at the time that Shadowland is his best work. I'm reading it now. Slow going, but good so far.

2024 Book 1: Utopia for Realists by Rutger Bregman.

Insightful but ultimately depressing because, despite #UBI seeming particularly realistic, it feels like we're even farther away from it ever happening at scale than when this first published in 2014. ☹️
