Every study done on the subject of hybrid/working from home says the opposite, Rachel, but do tell us that your corporate donors are writing policy without telling us your corporate donors are writing policy.

“I personally think it is good for people to get back into the office, I think it's good for productivity and good for morale.”

One perhaps hitherto under-recognised problem with has been revealed in a US case where the husband of a BP mergers & acquisitions manager, overhead her discussions of a BP acquisition & bought shares in advance, profiting significantly on the announcement of the acquisition.

Having confessed to his wife & she having been fired by BP for his insider dealing, the SEC got involved & has prosecuted him.

More grist for the mill for managers calling for a 'return to the office'?

I've got my dvd of "Beggars in Ermine" and playing it to check on its quality. A sort of society for steel workers with Lionel Atwill getting back at corrupt capitalists. Pretty good quality so far. Doing some work; but there's too much romantic music on . Later, the "Dirty Dozen" on TCM will do as background for online work.

And of course WFH has its downsides, from distractions from routine work to snacking!

one interesting impact of #workingfromhome has been a reduction in burglaries in areas with relatively high concentrations of #WFH households (one might call them #middleclass neighbourhoods?).

But, this may have displaced robberies & break-ins into areas with relatively less WFH households; those who work in sectors from hospitality to manufacturing, that require physical presence.. (shall we say #workingclass households?).

yet another #class effect of the 'new economy'!

Instead of working virtually via MS Teams from my home, you want me to commute to a shitty cube - or 'open floor plan' - where I put on a headset and work virtually with that same remote team... right?? Explain why I would do that?

Camilla Cavendish (FT) makes the argument that while can be great for mid-career with families, for the newly employed having already sent their years online, may actually be not only socially isolating, they will miss out on the tacit knowledge (and network) building of office life, and indeed may find a lack of visibility (and casual interaction) will adversely impact their career(s).

The evidence may not yet be in, but this is far from implausible!

Are starting to recognise the value of older ?

Modifying the cult of the young, Isabel Berwick (FT) has identified an emerging trend where the idea of 'return on experience' is factored into decisions.

Recognising the value experience (as opposed to youthful 'innovation') brings, RoE may be helping reduce some aspects of at work?

Here, focus on well-being, flexibility of working patterns & are recast as gaining the RoE of older staff

As vacancy rates hit 10% in UK, the move to & the strong pressure from to accommodate suggest commercial property may be about to see significant change(s).

Already investment in new offices is down & firms (as previously posted) are shifting their facilities management strategies (moving & changing offices).

An FT report suggests that & more has led to two key changes for firms supporting staff's desire to continue for some of the week.

1: they are making their more flexible & welcoming, to encourage staff to use them for collaborative activities (not so well done );

2: they are migrating their offices to better connected more central locations to make travel in easier when it is needed.

The 2nd is the opposite direction that many expected!

So what exactly is it that so many seem to fear about the rise of ?

I have two answers for you:

  1. increases autonomy, as they're not under constant potential surveillance & work to their own arrangement(s); Managers feel threatened by this avoidance of direct control;

  2. data on WFH seems to indicate workers are happier when hybrid working than when in the office full-time; whatever, they say, managers prefer fearful workers who're easier to manage

is better for the !

It makes sense;
less commuting = less emissions!

But its not all good news; emissions generating social activity while rises... so the Q. is the balance between the two - the more you work at home, it seems the more you reduce your net emissions

However, will the wanting people back int the office care?

One of the hidden costs of & the crisis in is the toll it takes on in-work trying to balance & care, with many employers not knowing how extensive the issue is.

While, as FT notes today, the first step to helping such employees navigate this situation, is to know about it, how many will trust their bosses not to uses such info against them?

Public First analysis on ONS data suggests a shift to more full time working, especially in sectors such as & IT-related employment.

This then puts a different slant on the move by some to limit or constrain as part of hybrid working.
