Every study done on the subject of hybrid/working from home says the opposite, Rachel, but do tell us that your corporate donors are writing policy without telling us your corporate donors are writing policy.
“I personally think it is good for people to get back into the office, I think it's good for productivity and good for morale.”
@fkamiah17 I used to commute three hours round trip per day to my job in downtown Miami. Where I live now would be a minimum seven hour round trip. I still have the same job. #workingfromhome
One perhaps hitherto under-recognised problem with #workingfromhome has been revealed in a US case where the husband of a BP mergers & acquisitions manager, overhead her discussions of a BP acquisition & bought shares in advance, profiting significantly on the announcement of the acquisition.
Having confessed to his wife & she having been fired by BP for his insider dealing, the SEC got involved & has prosecuted him.
More grist for the mill for managers calling for a 'return to the office'?
I've got my dvd of "Beggars in Ermine" and playing it to check on its quality. A sort of #MutualAid society for steel workers with Lionel Atwill getting back at corrupt capitalists. Pretty good quality so far. Doing some work; but there's too much romantic music on #ClassicalKING . Later, the "Dirty Dozen" on TCM will do as background for online work. #LionelAtwill#WorkingFromHome #narrative
A review of nearly 2000 studies of #workingfromhome confirms what many knew already: 'there are ways to make the home working approach actually work well for the organisation & also for the employee'!
But first you have to convince #managers who see #WFH as undermining their power & are as a result are keen to have intrusive #surveillance as part of any acceptance of #HybridWorking.
The increase in #hybridworking and #workingfromhome has contributed to a 30% drop in domestic #burglaries since 2019 as with more people at home there are fewer opportunities.
one interesting impact of #workingfromhome has been a reduction in burglaries in areas with relatively high concentrations of #WFH households (one might call them #middleclass neighbourhoods?).
But, this may have displaced robberies & break-ins into areas with relatively less WFH households; those who work in sectors from hospitality to manufacturing, that require physical presence.. (shall we say #workingclass households?).
So let me get this straight, global worforce, huge company, my immediate team is composed of people from 4 continents. Instead of working virtually via MS Teams from my home, you want me to commute to a shitty cube - or 'open floor plan' - where I put on a headset and work virtually with that same remote team... right?? Explain why I would do that?
Camilla Cavendish (FT) makes the argument that while #workingfromhome can be great for mid-career #workers with families, for the newly employed having already sent their #university years online, #wfh may actually be not only socially isolating, they will miss out on the tacit knowledge (and network) building of office life, and indeed may find a lack of visibility (and casual interaction) will adversely impact their career(s).
The evidence may not yet be in, but this is far from implausible!
The critics are right, rather than have seasonal chaos during to #engineerng works, the #railways & other #infrastructure could be repaired in the first week of January... the UK could have a state-defined #workingfromhome week, with those required to attend the workplace having subsidised travel laid on to avoid the disruption(s), and the whole thing co-ordinated by an active Govt. in the public interest...
Sorry, don't know what happened there, I think I'm hallucinating or something.... sorry
Modifying the cult of the young, Isabel Berwick (FT) has identified an emerging trend where the idea of 'return on experience' is factored into #workforce decisions.
Recognising the value experience (as opposed to youthful 'innovation') brings, RoE may be helping reduce some aspects of #ageism at work?
Here, focus on well-being, flexibility of working patterns & #workingfromhome are recast as gaining the RoE of older staff
And so the #Tories have weaponised #workingfromhome in their bid to force #longterrmsick & those with mental conditions (leaving them unable to leave the house) back to work...
Sarah White, the head of policy at the national disability charity Sense (quoted in the Guardian) said:
'Everyone should be able to work if they want to and can, but this latest government move looks sets to punish disabled people, adding more anxiety on to disabled households that are already struggling'!
Interestingly, according to an FT report on recruitment in the UK, it seems that the priority for applicants is now the availability of flexible & hybrid working allowing some element of #workingfromhome.
This is not to say that #wages are unimportant, but increasingly #workers are demanding the flexibility to manage their work-life balance and also reduce their hours commuting or in the office.
For managers set against hybrid working (and there are many), their 'talent pool' is shrinking
The majority of top executives i a recent KPMG survey thought that in the future, promotion and pay levels will be tied to attendance at the office...
Yup, those toxic managers who don't like you #workingfromhome, will be working tirelessly to make your career suffer unless you come back to work to be bullied, harassed & generally abused (because they like it like that)
As #office vacancy rates hit 10% in UK, the move to #HybridWorking & the strong pressure from to accommodate #workingfromhome suggest commercial property may be about to see significant change(s).
Already investment in new offices is down & firms (as previously posted) are shifting their facilities management strategies (moving & changing offices).
The Q. is how do we make these moves work positively as part of any #greentransition?
Despite is demonisation, is the 15 minute city the answer?
An FT report suggests that #workingfromhome & more #hybridworking has led to two key changes for firms supporting staff's desire to continue #WFH for some of the week.
1: they are making their #offices more flexible & welcoming, to encourage staff to use them for collaborative activities (not so well done #online);
2: they are migrating their offices to better connected more central locations to make travel in easier when it is needed.
The 2nd is the opposite direction that many expected!
#WFH increases #workers autonomy, as they're not under constant potential surveillance & work to their own arrangement(s); Managers feel threatened by this avoidance of direct control;
data on WFH seems to indicate workers are happier when hybrid working than when in the office full-time; whatever, they say, managers prefer fearful workers who're easier to manage
But its not all good news; emissions generating social activity while #WFH rises... so the Q. is the balance between the two - the more you work at home, it seems the more you reduce your net emissions
However, will the #managers wanting people back int the office care?
One of the hidden costs of #longtermsickness & the crisis in #socialcare is the toll it takes on in-work #carers trying to balance #work & care, with many employers not knowing how extensive the issue is.
#workingfromhome has helped #workers (where they are able) better balance caring with be 'present' for work.
While, as FT notes today, the first step to helping such employees navigate this situation, is to know about it, how many will trust their bosses not to uses such info against them?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it now appears that #women have benefitted more than men from the expansion of #hybridworking.
Public First analysis on ONS data suggests a shift to more full time working, especially in sectors such as #financialservcies & IT-related employment.
This then puts a different slant on the move by some #employers to limit or constrain #workingfromhome as part of hybrid working.
When something that benefits women is rolled back then we might think there's #sexism around?
Today was a great radio day...from 8 am through 10 am I made contacts with Indonesia,Japan,Asiatic Russia,Fiji, Samoa, South Africa, and Taiwan,a new country in the log for me ,all on digital mode while #workingfromhome
