Music platform @mirlo is raising funds to keep running! They let listeners buy directly from musicians, with only 7% going to the platform. They're owned by a worker co-op and open-source too
I really appreciate what they're doing, especially with the instability at Bandcamp
I was reading an article recently about #workercoop s and how profit/surplus is defined. It said Profit would be traditional Net Income and Surplus is Net Income with Member Wages added back in.
The concerning part for me is that Surplus would only be allocated amongst Members’ capital/labor contributions.
To me this is missing the whole point.
We need everyone to benefit financially to being part of a cooperative and that means returning a portion of each workers surplus value to them.
New legislation could accelerate the development of Worker Cooperatives across the US

"...As the U.S. braces for the “Silver Tsunami” of retiring business owners, this act represents a proactive step to keep businesses open, save jobs, and bolster the economy by transitioning these businesses to worker co-ops. By addressing the challenges faced by the worker co-op sector, including a lack of awareness & understanding, the National Worker Cooperative Development and Support Act aims to pave the way for a more inclusive & sustainable economic future, where workers not only have a say in their workplace but also share in its success. This legislation stands as a beacon of hope for a more equitable, cooperative America, drawing on the power of shared ownership to transform lives & communities..."
This is such an amazing story. After private equity fund Melrose shut this automotive factory in 2021, workers occupied and started a #WorkerCoop to repurpose the factory to make cargo bikes and solar panels.
:TwinPines: Thinking of starting a #WorkerCoop? Here's a good place to start to get your head around the business aspects (shout out to CWCF for making this excellent series!)
I'm looking for resources on how to setup a remote IT worker's cooperative, which state gives the best deal and what the bureaucracy consists off. Anyone have any resources for that? Current workers are from USA and various European states.
One of the organizations I'm working to transition to #WorkerOwnership via a hybrid #Cooperative/corp model (original founder holds a portion of the original Corp, new #WorkerCoop holds another portion) is looking for an outside 3rd party to help us do a pro-forma valuation.
How 'bout supporting San Francisco brewery workers at the bankrupt Anchor Brewery attempting to buy it from the evil Sapporo Corporation and run it as a worker co-op?
Anchor is the oldest craft brewery in the U.S., in operation since the 1800s.
