32 years ago today on May 5 1992, one of the greatest games of all time (and forever my favorite first person shooter), Wolfenstein 3D, was released. I wrote about it for the list of 20 video games I can't stop thinking about (https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com/2024/04/06/20-video-games-i-cant-stop-thinking-about). I still play it regularly. Sometimes weekly. Killing digital Nazis is always fun and therapeutic.
I had the pleasure of seeing #JohnRomero at a conference in #Berlin a while back - his stories about making and breaking with #Wolfenstein3D and #Doom are basically my dreams of the 90s. For anyone into this stuff, I can't recommend David Kushner's Masters of Doom enough - and the audiobook is available on Audible and narrated by Wil fucking Wheaton! A couple of days ago John's own book #DoomGuy was released: https://romero.com/shop/p/doomguy
New SQH video! We all know Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are classics. But you know what would make them better? If your answer was "4 color cyan/magenta CGA palette," then this video is for you! https://youtu.be/sF9SY2An5j0
I feel like I did '10 games to know me' before on here but I can't find the post, and I've met so many more of you cool people since then. So here's 10, not even sure it's the same 10. Probably close. What are yours?
Wolfenstein 3D
Diablo (1 & 2)
Centipede
Black Widow
Wizodd
Plaque Attack
Felix the Cat
Rogue
Gun Nac
Duke Nukem (1 & 2)
Already in the days of the home computers, smaller software houses were that extra something. The resourceful name #Pandora obviously promises a big surprise when opening their products. This became a reality after playing #IntoTheEaglesNest. In a way, the much more famous #Wolfenstein3D is only its logical sequel.
