Just released dos2ansi v0.4, with lots of #DOS#codepage s supported and a testmode to display them.
The next nice feature would be to use the actual terminal capabilities if output goes there. Very simple on *nix-like systems (#Linux, #FreeBSD, ...), just link #curses and use the termcap functions.
Thinking about #Windows again, either I keep relying on #UTF8 support (since #win7 IIRC? and still a bit buggy) and #ANSI sequences support (since #win10) .... OR I attempt to use the native #Console#API there (using special functions to write in #UTF16 and other special functions to set colors, which would require a major refactoring first 🙄)
I'd like to coin two terms to highlight an aspect of software which I think isn't discussed enough:
A #UserControlledInterface (UCI) is where the user chooses how to render the content; HTML / Terminal. Text is always selectable, images can be saved. Choice of clients.
A #VendorControlledInterface (VCI) is the opposite: Games and Apps. Interface is dictated by the vendor. Poor accessibility. Improvements cannot be made without the vendor. Bit rot.
The Appification of... everything... these days is IMO why OSes are so terrible now compared to the days of #Win7, #Mac OS Snow Leopard & #Ubuntu w/ Gnome -- the idea that the user is in control has gone out of the window. We will dictate the interface now and you will fall in line. Just look at the disaster of Ubuntu switching to Unity, damn the users and their complaints. Immediately Ubuntu lost seriousness in the eyes of users and a myriad of other distros popped up (#Linux Mint, for example)
I’m getting closer and closer to a point where I’d rather risk malware by using #Win7 than keep using the official corporate malware #win10 or #Win11
Linux, BSD and ChromeOS are not realistic alternatives. Apple has the greed tax
Win7 just leaves me alone. It works. It’s responsive. It doesn’t need constant updates. It’s (mostly) compatible. And I don’t need to go back to school for a decade to use it for something other than word processing. No other operating system has that holy hexafecta
