I’m getting closer and closer to a point where I’d rather risk malware by using #Win7 than keep using the official corporate malware #win10 or #Win11
Linux, BSD and ChromeOS are not realistic alternatives. Apple has the greed tax
Win7 just leaves me alone. It works. It’s responsive. It doesn’t need constant updates. It’s (mostly) compatible. And I don’t need to go back to school for a decade to use it for something other than word processing. No other operating system has that holy hexafecta
@kierkegaank yeah, MX Linux + XFCE might be perfect for you then - they have special gui tools and you really don’t have to drop to the command line at all. Unlike Gentoo 🤓
@kierkegaank i know what you mean - I was installing slackware from floppy on my parents computer back in the 90s, so i’m used to it, but mx linux is tangibly different. it might still not be up to your standards, but it makes my old razer laptop feel just as much like a razer running windows
@kierkegaank yup, win11 is pretty freaking sweet, almost as good as macos (they borrowed some usability features from macos), but can’t abide by the snoopy$oft
@kierkegaank I'm a linux user more than anything else but I have a Windows system as well and I think you're right - Windows 7 was better than anything Micro$oft has produced since.
@mmiasma@kierkegaank Windows 10 was nice, I liked it, feature-wise, better than 7, same for 11 - better features than 10, but ever since 7 it’s been a downhill ski run to non-pure operating systems
@kierkegaank a perennial penguin, eh? Ever tried MX Linux? That’s my distro of choice now - mostly pure debian with security and power user goodies added.
@kierkegaank hehe, the BSD’s are my personal favorites, I’m more of a Unix philosophy type than a Linux philosophy. But.. if you can’t boot it wthen you can’t use it!
MX Linux hits the sweet soot for a daily driver - easy peasy installation of nonfree nvidia drivers, even.
Now, if you really want to talk about bootstrapping, ever tried getting Gentoo to boot?
That is the best Linux, if you are only interested in stability. It is rock solid - have to build every update from source, heh.
