It think i have more or less decided on the #terramaster f4-423 NAS as base for a home server.

Thinking about the setup i'd like to run virtual machines in there wher one of them might be #trueNAS

Does TrueNAS support running as virtual machine? Does it make sense? And yes, it means that TrueNAS would not handle the drives.

Other virtual machines should be a backup server, a home automatisation server and probably a monitoring server.

What's your opinion on that?

Question for my system engineers:

What's better for a home lab

  1. One application per VM
  2. Couple applications per VM
  3. All applications on one VM

I got around 6-7 applications that run on my server

Watching @CraftComputing's video on the 45HomeLab HL15 server. For around $2200 for a full-build server with 32 GB of RAM that can support 15x 3.5" hard drives is a lot better than the TrueNAS Mini XL+ 8x 3.5" hard drives with 64 GB of RAM at about $3000.

If the HL15 were out when I was building up my new NAS, I probably would have gone with that over the TrueNAS X+ that I picked up. The X+ configuration has 32 GB of RAM, same as the HL15.

The HL15 has fewer CPU cores (6) vs the X+/XL+'s 8 cores, but the X+/XL+ uses Intel C3000-series Atom cores versus full Xeon cores. Plus, you can stuff the HL15 with a lot more RAM, network cards and other PCIe cards. The tradeoff is size and noise, of course.

Hey homelabbers, a question for you:

I'm thinking of running TrueNAS Scale on my upcoming NAS. I also want to run a few Docker containers on it. So I'm thinking of running TNS on bare metal, start a VM in it (Debian), and run containers in the virtualized Debian.

Anyone doing it like this? Does it make sense? Any tips?

Having been a FreeBSD (and BSD in general) user since the 2.x days and managed a small fleet of servers since the heady 4.x days (including a few Sun UltraSPARC II and IIi servers and dealing with the ATA problems), I've been rooting for FreeNAS and TrueNAS CORE for a long time.

It's kind of disheartening to have seen support for FreeBSD from hardware, software and cloud vendors fade away. I knew that when TrueNAS SCALE was going to be based on Linux that it'll eventually lead to CORE getting sunsetted.

I do have to say that I am a bit of a hypocrit in that I migrated from CORE to SCALE on my TrueNAS Mini X+ and only have one server running FreeBSD (even though the cloud provider no longer provides support).

Small update on my custom #NAS project; Last week I officially factory reset the #Synology and have put it up for sale. Such a good feeling to finally be getting rid of that thing.

Last week I also got the #FractalDesign #PC case I had been waiting on a restock for, and I have transplanted the NAS over. Some final (SATA power) cables are expected to come in today so I can install the drives I used to have in the Synology. We're getting there!

I have to say, in my brief period experimenting with / as an alternative to Google, it's held up much better than I'd expected.

In this instance, although NONE of these search engines have actually found what I'm looking for, I muuuch prefer what Kagi returns than what Google or Bing return. I was trying to download the installer image for SCALE but the download via the browser kept failing even in when using a download manager so I figured it was torrent time.

Tried a few searches, "TrueNas Scale Torrent," then "TrueNas Scale ISO Magnet Link" which brought up results from LinuxTracker, but not the current version which I had seen when I was on the download page earlier. Time to be a little more specific:
"TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet"

When you get this specific:

  • Google kinda gives up, the top link might have what you're looking for, but it doesn't give you any page content in the blurb. You'll have to open the link to find out. That's all it gives you.
  • Bing actually does a good job at highlighting the version number located within pages and forums. Dare I say it, better than Google's results here.
  • Kagi gives you a link straight to the download repository with 'Today' clearly marked and although Bing's highlighting of forums posts is useful, Kagi is technically being more relevant to my query by showing LinuxTracker and DistroWatch directly afterward.

You could argue that Google's results make it clear that what you're searching for doesn't exist, but it's also just as easy to assume that Google didn't like my specific wording and that I just need to keep searching. But in the case of Kagi, the results give me a better picture of what's going on.

Since it couldn't find results for the whole query, I get:

  • An immediate understanding that what I'm looking for has just been released.
  • Results for the version/file I'm looking for but in the wrong format.
  • Results that match the general query but for an older version.
  • Again, all dated. It's clear that 'Today' was when the version I was searching for was published, then the torrent links are from April.

tl;dr The layout of Kagi's personally gives me a better gauge of why I'm not finding desired results.

Google search results for "TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet" A generic link to 'Download TrueNAS SCALE' with no indication of when the link was published. Below, a bunch of 'People also ask' dropdown questions about TrueNAS in general. Nothing to do with the query. That's it.
Bing search results for "TrueNAS-SCALE-22.12.3.2.iso magnet" Top two results show TrueNAS download links for the current version, not in the right format and it's ambiguous as to when they were published. Then there's some forum posts talking about the release. Again, no date information - but the version number is at least highlighted as something that's mentioned on the pages.

A few weeks ago I bought a terramaster NAS (because it was the only device you could install other OSes like proxmox or truenas on it) and now UGREEN published a kickstarter with their new NASes which can do the same but are much newer in terms of hardware…

Should I buy a UGREEN and sell my terraform…?

I've written up a short (not really) post about my experience of setting up a #TrueNAS Mini X+ and using SCALE as my primary home NAS.

Blog Post: Homelab Upgrade: TrueNAS Mini X+

Upgrading my TrueNAS Mini X+ from TrueNAS Scale 23.10.2 to 24.04.0 was smooth.

I had to change the location of the node_exporter program from /usr/bin to a new location, which is under a separate dataset I created for local apps (not to be confused with the TrueNAS Scale Applications dataset).

The /usr directory, which is mounted from boot-pool/ROOT/24.04.0/usr, is now mounted as read-only.

Sometimes having your own server and hosting stuff yourself can be a real struggle. A few days ago I noticed that all my apps on my TrueNAS server were down and after investigating I noticed that all apps were stuck deploying and my server was at 100% CPU load. Turns out that kubernetes (k3s) is somehow stuck and eating up resources. I even had trouble stopping all my apps and rebooting the system didn't solve the problem (would have been to easy I guess). Well let's see if the ticket I created will be any help.

I've got somewhat distracted today from my original plans, though have started on a new blog post that should go live hopefully in the next few days, and am currently working on the next steps for my new home NAS.

Currently waiting for TrueNAS Core to get written to my USB Stick and away we will go!

So I'm using #ZFS on #TrueNAS and today I noticed that "auto-trim" is turned off on my ZFS pool. "Hmm," I asked myself "what is TRIM on ZFS?"

After a few minutes of searching, I have no idea what TRIMming does. I know a hundred ways to do "it" manually or automatically. But I don't know what it DOES.

So I finally found this presentation from 2019 that pretty well lays out what it is and why it exists. My drives, however, are rotating magnetic drives (just like in Victorian times), so I'm not sure there's any value in TRIMming my ZFS. Thoughts?

After watching videos from @tomlawrence and @technotim about #TrueNAS I'm still somewhat undecided how to setup my 12-disk server with a mix of old/new disks for a general purpose storage (backup, iSCSI targets for VMs, etc...), but it seems like to have this kind of setup:

sdm: system disk (SATA DOM)

8 or 12 disks as 2-disk mirrors in a pool with NVMe for SLOG and maybe 2 or 4 SSDs for L2ARC, depending on whether I can fit them inside the 2 RU server or if I need to use drive bays for that.

Setting up an HPE MicroServer Gen8 for offsite backup use (meaning I will physically locate this box offsite and I will replicate to it from my prod storage).

I always use RAID 6/RAID-z2 for my storage systems, so the 4x 14TB Seagate Exos X16 drives would leave me with 25 TB.

I don't usually use such large capacity drives, so the jump to 38 TB raw capacity that comes with RAID-z is a bit more tempting than usual. 😬

And it's a backup appliance too... 😅
