#CivilSocietyRisesAgainstUnspeakableAtrocities: Amnesty International welcomes the new report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, which concludes there are “reasonable grounds to believe the threshold indicating Israel’s commission of genocide is met”. As the UN Human Rights Council holds a meeting today to discuss the report’s findings, Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard said:
“This is a crucial body of work that must serve as a vital call to action to states. They must uphold their obligations under the Genocide Convention and take concrete measures to protect Palestinians in #Gaza today.
Early in his thinking, Raphael Lemkin, the creator of the theory of genocide, thought a people’s artistic, religious, literary, and iconographic heritage so vital to their thriving that to wipe it out completely would still count as a vast crime even if the plunderers left the people alive. He called such an act “vandalism,” later, “cultural genocide,” and like most of his better ideas, it did not survive the abattoir of secretarial drafts and committee debates on its way to codification in the 1948 Genocide Convention.

It’s the “only country that has a similar experience to the Palestinian people and that has been firmly attached to the struggle for freedom and human rights,” she said, referring to the racial segregation and brutality black South Africans endured under apartheid.
“For us to be invisible in a massive human struggle where we know a huge murder is underway [in Gaza], I think that is unacceptable. … And having a large protest with a million is insufficient. There has to be an ongoing campaign to say to the world: ‘This can't be.’”
While emphasizing that her country intends to proceed with objective arguments regarding the belief that "genocide" is taking place in the Gaza Strip, Pandor said that a number of countries have also announced that they will join the case against the Israeli regime.
“I believe the rulings of the court have been ignored,” Pandor was quoted as saying.
Furthermore, she exclaimed that the legal papers for the upcoming court session have been prepared, but there was yet to be a date to be announced for the hearing.
The U.S. (and Russia in Aleppo) carried out horrendous episodes of violence — like the sieges of Fallujah, Raqqa and Mosul — largely out of the view of the American public, with mainstream U.S. media neglecting to cover their toll. But today, officials are openly drawing on those very histories to inform the Israeli atrocities in the assault on Gaza.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and other Pentagon officials have explicitly pointed to the U.S. assaults on Iraqi and Syrian cities in their current conversations with Israel about Gaza.
The legacy of these U.S. (and Russian) assaults is mass death and displacement.
Excluded from the demonstration was any reference to the essential issues in the development of a #movement against the #genocide. Nothing was said of the history of Israel and Zionism or its role as a bulwark for imperialism in the Middle East. No one referred to the interests motivating imperialist support for the genocide, the three decades of unending war, the preparations for war against Iran, the relationship of this to the ongoing US-NATO war against Russia or the developing conflict with China. There was no reference to the working class or the growth of the class struggle throughout the world.
The organizers wanted no references to any of this because it would cut across their orientation to the Democratic Party. In this case with Joe Biden, you know, he is clearly trying to make an appeal not just to Black voters, but really trying to fend off criticism that he is #racist, that he is sponsoring a #genocide. And that criticism is completely well founded, because he is sponsoring a genocide, and genocide is the most extreme form of racial violence that there is. And so, to use the pulpit at Emanuel AME in this manner, to make it a prop, essentially, for Joe Biden’s reelection bid, to me, is the greatest assault on truth. I know Joe Biden stood there in the pulpit and said that there is an assault on truth that’s happening right now. Joe Biden is, in many ways, leading that assault. And I know that he’s running against Donald Trump, who we know is also a serial liar, but Donald Trump is not the one who is currently in office right now. Bree Newsome Bass on Democracy Now- And this effort to use the church, not just the Black church, but the site of racial violence, of a mass murder, to deflect from the fact that Joe Biden himself is bombing churches, bombing mosques, bombing places of worship and #murdering many #civilians, people who have sought shelter in those places, it just exposes the complete hypocrisy of this entire situation and the vacuum of moral leadership at the top.
