EP458 - WordPress and an Industry in Flux - WPwatercooler
This week on the show we’re discussing layoffs, AI, integration, industry shrinkage, and dealing with Tech Bros (oh my!) @jasontucker @sereedmedia @boogah
Some people asked me "Why don't you put the #NUCbook on #Kickstarter or #Indiegogo?" and I then tell them that I'd rather want the project to be ready to be built and have actually working prototypes to avoid ending up like the #modbook...
Have you licked the boots of your favourite billionaire and/or trillion-dollar corporation yet today?
Remember to nitpick and challenge every word of those trying to warn folks away from them and creating alternatives that don’t exploit people for profit (fucking commies, amirite?) while giving them every benefit of the doubt (let’s be frank, who hasn’t caused the occasional genocide?)
Honestly, it's quite annoying that the vast majority of #tech#podcasts are hosted by #SilliconValley#techbros. A lot of the content is quite useful, and I do get to learn useful things that I didn't know before.
But just the total lack of, anything but superficial, criticism of the big tech companies, just accepting whatever nonsense they release without question, the horrible grindset mentality, and the toxic positivity just wears me down so much.
alright, I think it's time to translate the #NWB spec language to RDF and start on the first leg of getting this p2p thing off the ground and mirror all the neurophysiology archives. got a big stack of hard drives and bandwidth going to waste
Last night Mrs. F and I watched the spy-action comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre!
Takeaways:
• Christopher Benstead, responsible for the score, had apparently been asked to come up with something that sounded an awful lot like The Godfather
• Hugh Grant is terrific, but we questioned the decision to have him do his best Ricky Gervais throughout (it's a spot-on imitation, btw)
• Its representation of #TechBros is brilliant
• It was fun (but don't think too much!)
Working my way through the latest #meta drama. I'm not on the "everyone should pre-emptively block" bandwagon, but I also don't need to wait and see with them. We know who they are already.
But signing an #nda to meet with Meta to discuss the future of the #fediverse is absurd. And the defense by a particular admin was telling.
There's a good chance I peace out and stick with my personal instance, because #techbros are gonna #techbro and it's feeling like less of a community these days.
If you're worried about #LLM-based #AI, you're focusing on the wrong thing and may lack imagination.
This, and related developments (I can't view them as advancements, knowing how this all will end) are what's going to end the human race as we've known ourselves.
Much good can be derived from technologies like this, but we—being as we are—will ultimately go much to far.
I don't think we're prepared for our instant evolution (and, separately, eventual mechanization).
After finishing the last two episodes of #ClassOf09 (#FX, on #Hulu) I was processing my thoughts before posting here and this #Wired#article was highlighted for me in #AppleNews.
@denki@carnage4life "comment section" does not replace professional legal advie.
#NotLegalAdvice but you better understand the legal ramifications that claiming AI can do "copyrightable works" becuase that would be the necesity for any copyright violation being possible.
Because that shit will more likely be used to rent-seek on law-abiding people and make everyone who learned from books a perpetual debt peon rather that restricting #TechBros at rentseeking.
Reddit is killing 3rd party apps. Why? Those 3rd party apps filter out Ads and spam/scams and have good focus on usability. Reddit want only two options: Their shity Website or official app to show you more Ads. This is why the central cloud and forums are evil. I'm telling your: By the iOS 17 release, @IceCubesApp will probably be bumped to iOS 17 only for future updates. It's working fine as is on iOS 16 so it's fine. I want to keep it a good SwiftUI demo project, so there is so many iOS 17+ only new thing that would make it a dealbreaker.
@dimillian@IceCubesApp I also have a feeling that @IceCubesApp user base will be updating to IOS 17 a lot faster then most apps user bases after all how many of use would consider ourselves #techbros.
