“DIZZY”
by Emily Ding
“Dizzy” is the feeling you get when traveling for a long time. Like a cartoon character who’s dazed and sees stars or birds flying around their head.
—Emily Ding
Drawing inspiration from flora, fauna, and human temperament Emily Ding says her painterly work tells stories of emotions and experiences. Based in Austin and Houston Ding was in San Francisco in early 2019 and felt “dizzy” when she had to tell her family she would not be with them for Lunar New Year. Instead she painted this sublime work on 8th St near Broadway in nearby Oakland, for community art organizer Dragon School 99. While painted from afar Ding says the piece is filled with symbolism of going home. The swallow tattoo, historically used by sailors as a symbol of travel experience, was also believed to take the sailor’s soul to heaven if they were lost at sea. And the colorful circle of swallows are flying counterclockwise back to the start—back home. #streetart#art#mastoart#artist#fediart#artmatters
