12/05/2024 - a #StandingStoneSunday visit to Balnuaran of Clava today.

Morning visit on the way somewhere. If you like your stones standing, they have plenty in circles round the big cairns. This place is wow and one of my favourite megalithic sites.

A big rectangular stone. Part of a circle round one of the cairns. Nice trees surrounding the area.

A 2023 trip to Unst in the Shetland Islands for

I'd wanted to visit this stone with a while. It looked big at first sight, up close it seemed massive. Standing all alone in the open landscape, it seemed at peace. It's the most northerly standing stone I've been to and one of my favourites. A 12ft loveable monster.

A trip back to 2013 and Caithness for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Sometimes you come across a big lump of a standing stone, a little bit in the middle of nowhere, and you just have to give it a hug.

Standing stones

We were built as a compass to the
Stars and the sun
The moon held us
As the earth turned.
We were raised in wildwood
Times, when fires burned
In hearts above.
Standing still, prayers still
Drip from us,
We hold your knowledge
In the turning of the sun.

A poem by Rachel Burch.

Long shadows for today's the fabulous Boswens menhir on the West Penwith moors.

The stone is very asymmetrical and looks different from every angle. If you walk along the Tinner's Way below it, the stone appears as a tall figure on the skyline, which turns to watch you as you pass.

It's intervisible with the marvellous Chûn Quoit Neolithic tomb.

This visit on a beautiful autumn day, November 2010.

Off to the Forest of Dean for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering; The Long Stone near Staunton.

It's right next to a busy road, but if you can block that out it's a really lovely, tapering 7 foot tall stone in a beautiful woodland setting. (Portrait, needs a click)

In folklore, if you prick the stone with a pin at the stroke of midnight, it will bleed.

Visited October 2010.

Mains of Clava North East for today's #StandingStoneSunday. A six foot plus single stone, it's possible there was a cairn here as well. It stands in a field a little to the northeast of the wonderful Clava cairns, in the Nairn valley near Culloden.

Visited October 2010. (Portrait, needs a click).
