CNN reports the court rejected "the argument raised by civil rights groups that lawmakers impermissibly used race as a proxy to bolster the GOP’s chances. But the high court also said that the civil rights groups that challenged the maps could continue to pursue one part of their claim, a move that will likely delay the battle over the districts for months."

With control of the House of Representatives hanging in the balance, the time-consuming appeals process means elections in multiple districts will take place using maps that have been challenged as discriminatory to #voters of color.
#SouthCarolina to use #CongressionalMap deemed #unconstitutional #SCOTUS heard arguments on the redistricting case in Oct but has yet to rule🤬, essentially running out the clock for the #2024election. A #federal#court ruled Thurs that time had run out to draw a new congressional district in #SC & said the state could use its existing map even though it had earlier determined that map was unconstitutional.
The panel of 3 judges last year concluded that #SouthCarolina’s #Republican-led #legislature “exiled” 30k #BlackVoters from the district to make it safer for a #White#GOP incumbent, Rep #NancyMace. #SC appealed, & both sides asked #SCOTUS to expedite the case to ensure a final ruling was in place well ahead of #election season. The justices heard arguments in October but have yet to rule.
W/ no decision & the June 11 primary on the horizon, #SouthCarolina sought to use the map this yr even tho it had been deemed #unconstitutional. The panel unanimously agreed Thurs to keep the map in place for the #2024election.
It noted courts typically don’t allow maps to be used once found to be invalid. “But w/the primary election procedures rapidly approaching, the appeal before #SCOTUS still pending, & no remedial plan in place, the ideal must bend to the practical,” the judges wrote. #law
Last yr the panel…found the map illegally split neighborhoods in the #Charleston area to make #NancyMace’s race easier. The new lines constituted a #RacialGerrymander that “exiled >30k African American citizens from their previous district,” the panel found.
In arguments before #SCOTUS in Oct, attys for #SouthCarolina argued that lawmakers had not relied on race to draw maps in violation of the #Constitution. Rather, they used #political info to decide…, they said.

NEW: A right-wing legal group led by Cleta Mitchell filed a lawsuit seeking access to voter rolls in #SouthCarolina ahead of the 2024 election. The state denied the group's request, saying out-of-state organizations cannot purchase voter lists.
This lawsuit comes as protecting voter data will be a key concern ahead of the 2024 elections as conservative groups pursue relentless legal action in an attempt to make voter records public.
