My name is Nixon, and I'm an A'i Cofán filmmaker, artist, and member of the #Sinangoe#IndigenousGuard.
You might be wondering what that means: an Indigenous guard. To understand it better, allow me to take you on a journey into my ancestral territory in the Upper #Amazon, a land of dense #forests and towering trees, crossed by surging #rivers. A land preyed on by #loggers and #miners.
Because when our forests are damaged, there will be a massive climate crisis, species like the birds of paradise will become extinct, and not just our Namblong Indigenous culture will be destroyed, but that of all peoples everywhere.
From one woman to another, I know that you have many powerful friends who can help us to save our forest and our home in Grime Nawa Valley.
SIGN: REMOVE HORRIFIC BABY MONKEY TORTURE GROUPS FROM TELEGRAM
By Emily Raap
This is a joint campaign by Lady Freethinker and Action for Primates.
Videos showing extreme cruelty to baby monkeys are spreading rapidly on social media – especially Telegram, a popular encrypted messaging service.
In 2021, Lady Freethinker published a report in partnership with Action for Primates on one of the first big private monkey hater groups on Telegram – Milliontears.
Since then, countless other groups have formed on #Telegram to buy, sell, and share videos of horrifically gruesome acts of baby monkeys being tortured in unspeakable ways.
Telegram recently told BBC News that it was “committed to protecting user privacy and human rights such as freedom of speech” and that moderators “cannot proactively patrol private groups.”
Every summer, the Faroe Islands’ beaches are soaked with #whale and #dolphin blood as hundreds of these majestic creatures are needlessly slaughtered.
Fishers in boats circle the whales and dolphins, driving them into shallow waters before killing them with knives.
The government says it is an Indigenous tradition that feeds families on the islands, but only a handful of locals consume whale and dolphin meat yet they kill over 1000 a year.
An opinion piece published yesterday in the #BillingsGazette explores #CodyRoberts ' #torture of a young female #wolf in Daniel, #Wyoming. By now, most of you have heard the news or seen the disturbing photos and videos. We remain disgusted by the #cruelty, as does our partner and op-ed author #JeffEwelt.
In his op-ed, Jeff Ewelt, the Executive Director of #ZooMontana and a partner of The #RelistWolves Campaign,
• Sign this petition calling on #SubletteCounty officials to bring more severe charges against #CodyRoberts in effort to hold him accountable and deter others from attempting similar acts of #cruelty.
It has never been clearer -- or more urgent -- that wolves need their #EndangeredSpeciesAct protections restored in #Wyoming, #Idaho and #Montana. It's the single best way that we can end these unconscionable #WolfHunts.
#CodyRoberts must be charged for animal cruelty not only for #justice to be served, but for the precedent that this incident will set.
Urge the Director to support legislative action to ban "wolf/coyote whacking," which is the practice of using #snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles to chase down and kill #wolves and #coyotes.
• Send a letter urging the State of #Wyoming to ban the use of snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles to chase down and kill #wolves and other animals.
#Idaho is doubling down on its goal of slaughtering most of the state's #wolves.
This spring, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to approve a plan that calls for reducing the wolf population, from more than 1300 to as few as 500.1
If Idaho succeeds, it'll be a heartbreaking slaughter of #GrayWolves across the state.
The Endangered Species Act is under attack. In the last 60 days, 3 federal anti-wolf bills have gained traction in Congress with sponsors and co-sponsors across 15 different states. These are live bills which, if successful, continue a dangerous precedent of cherry-picking and legislatively delisting certain species and, in some cases, don't allow for judicial review.
Will it take the death of a child to ban M-44s, the indiscriminate poison land mines lurking in our great outdoors in at least 10 states? We fear it might. These cyanide-dispersing devices used by government agents to kill livestock predators have already poisoned people and killed countless dogs and nontarget wildlife. M-44s cannot be used safely, which makes them a public safety menace.
END ALL IMPORTS & EXPORTS OF DOLPHINS ACROSS U.S. BORDERS
Captive #dolphins and #whales are transported across the world to #aquariums and #MarineParks. These animals are ripped away from their families and all they know, forced to live in barren concrete #tanks. Transportation is a stressful process for these animals. The journey itself poses significant risks. Stress-induced illnesses and health problems are an issue and in the worst cases it can lead to death. When transported,
it is far removed from their natural #environment. Dolphins kept in captivity are known to suffer from stress-related health issues and illnesses. Confining these animals to lives in tanks is inhumane and selfish.
Join us in asking Members of Congress to amend the #MarineMammalProtectionAct to stop any imports or exports of dolphins across U.S. Borders.
#Wyoming's wolf hunting season has been open for 12 days -- and 3 #wolves have already been shot and killed on #Yellowstone 's doorstep.
How many wolves will get caught in a hunter's crosshairs this year? Trophy hunters will be allowed to kill dozens in the hunt areas outside Yellowstone National Park.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you on the first red cove day of 2023, a day that witnessed the ruthless #hunting and #slaughter of ~10 innocent Risso's #dolphins in #Taiji. The dolphins fought hard to escape but after a 2 hour chase, the entire #pod was forced into the cove and brutally killed.
Our team is not just standing by. At the end of August we submitted an appeal
During its final days, the #Trump administration unlawfully issued leases to #drill for #oil on the refuge's fragile coastal plain where these animals live.
But the Arctic is already heating up at a rate four times faster than the rest of the planet. The stakes for this incredibly vulnerable place couldn't be higher.
The #Biden administration took the right action by canceling the severely flawed Trump-era leases.
Now we need to speak up and declare: The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is no place for oil drilling — period.
375,000 NATIVE ANIMALS KILLED by One Program in 2023
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's notorious #WildlifeServices program just put out its required tally of #killings for last year: 375,045 native animals. The federal extermination program targets a long list of wild creatures, chiefly at the behest of #agricultural interests in states like #Texas, #Colorado and #Idaho.
According to the report — which almost surely understates the actual numbers —
"Taxpayer-funded wildlife slaughter lets livestock operators and the agriculture industry ignore problems that lead to conflict instead of fixing them. #WildlifeServices should focus on implementing commonsense #coexistence measures like cleaning up livestock carcasses that attract wolves and bears.”
In the last several years, litigation and community opposition curtailed Wildlife Services operations in numerous states
The state of #Alaska recently killed more than 100 brown #bears, gray #wolves, and other important #carnivores — shooting them from #helicopters in a misguided attempt to boost the #Mulchatna caribou herd for hunters.
Each year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gives Alaska millions of dollars for state wildlife management projects. By law, that money can only go to states that have demonstrated their commitment to wildlife conservation.
Alaska doesn't deserve the money until it changes its law that requires the slaughter of bears, wolves and other carnivores.
The federal #government shouldn't be in the business of killing top predators for hunters' benefit. Tell the Fish and Wildlife Service not to give Alaska any more conservation funding until the state conserves — not kills — its wildlife.
I urge you to re-list the West Indian manatee subpopulations, including the #Florida manatee, as endangered. One-fifth of Florida manatees died in the last two years alone. Their #population can’t sustain such heavy losses.
#Pollution in the water has created massive algal blooms which block the sun from reaching the sea floor, killing the #seagrass
#Manatees, their #habitat and their food sources all need better #protections. Please restore manatees’ full protections under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct and devote more resources to saving these gentle animals.
Wild animals are having their bones crushed, their spines snapped, and their lives slowly suffocated out of them in vicious #traps that are currently legal and allowed in #NationalWildlifeRefuges.
Now, a new bill seeks to end this torture. The #RefugeFromCruelTrappingAct, or H.R. 5217, seeks to amend the National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act to ban the use of steel-jaw leg-hold traps,
HELP NY BECOME THE 10TH STATW TO BAN KILLING CONTESTS
An important update for all New Yorkers: #Oregon has just become the 9th state to ban cruel wildlife #KillingContests, after signing their bill into law last week. It’s now more crucial than ever for #NewYork to follow suit!
The Bill A.2917/S.4099, aiming to end inhumane wildlife killing contests in New York, is already on Gov. Kathy #Hochul 's desk and just needs her signature.
#Oregon will officially supply #wolves for Colorado's #reintroduction project. #Colorado has officially entered into a one-year agreement with Oregon to obtain up to 10 #GrayWolves to reintroduce to the state. The agreement removes the final barrier for Colorado's reintroduction efforts, and releases are set to start before the end of the year.
Colorado plans to capture wolves in Oregon using helicopter crews and spotter planes in December.
Our campaign is excited to learn that Oregeon has decided to assist in Colorado's wolf reintroduction process, and we hope other states/territories follow suit.
