I'm pretty sure that the #Fediverse is one of the first social networks I've been on that didn't ever ask me to betray any of the people in my address book.
Soapbox imo has to be one of the nicest front-ends for pleroma/mastodon style activitypub platforms, but it was intimated there were some reputational issues with it. Not up to speed I did a small amount of digging which led to plermoadrama....
@_ed Drama is maybe within their community of developers. #Pleroma doesn't deserve to be reviewd by it's developer's personal point of view, but by it's functionality which is great #fediverse platform. Also #rebased good, so who cares about drama...
Thus far the easiest #activitypub service I’ve installed has been #gotosocial, followed by #mastodon, and I wasn’t actually able to get #pleroma (or any forks) to build properly. I’m really rooting for the @gotosocial team and am looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
I think the issue with #pleroma was just not really understanding the resources needed to build vs run, so it might be worth revisiting that or #akkoma maybe, to experiment.
The weirdness of course being that you can’t really swap out backends easily since the federation basically locks other instances to this particular instance running -this particular software- which still confounds me.
#Lemmy#Friendica#Pleroma
How do I get my own #mastodon /server? I am not a sysadmin. There is 2 routes to this.
a) a managed hosting like masto.host.
➕ very good for no technical experience. web server cost is built in. somebody else is doing all the maintenance
➖ it does cause a bit of a centralization, very few reputable options so limits the options to move.
@eylul What's it with #pleroma ? I thought it is almost mastodon clone, just lighter and better adapted for self hosting. Yet the I see it silently dismissed once again. Is it their dev culture, or the software, or what?
@Kaiteki@caos
I'm a bit sad #Mastodon is THE fediverse and the rest just in the background and no one mentions them really... #Misskey is awesome, and there is #Pleroma (I don't like the interface, but that does not mean it's not a viable platform, that's a personal taste). Yes mostly #pixelfed is mentioned but that's a bit different type of platform, it's more like Instagram.
Based on fediverse.to, Mastodon has 3601 instances, Pleroma has 911, and Misskey has 432.
Anyway, I would be happy if people mention these options too and not just Mastodon.
If an actor provides an outbox URL, but not an inbox URL, it means that it cannot receive Follow activities and it can not push content to the followers. In such cases, the follower's server should switch to periodic polling like RSS.
This will enable statically-built blogs ( #jekyll#hugo etc) to appear in Mastodon network.
If we want the network of apps to grow, developers needs to talk together and find consensus. This initiative looks like it's moving in the right direction!
@dudenas not dismissing pleroma and gotoSocial etc at all. :) I am very glad these options exist. When I chose to self host in 2020, pleroma was still very new and most of the current alternatives didn't exist yet. Today I am not sure if I might have made a different choice.
but the smaller user base can be a draw back. this post is about options, not dismissing any of them :)
Gotosocial is considered alpha, Pleroma seems to be mature, and quite feature-rich.
Neither of them has properly developed account migration, which is a deal breaker for me. In other words, if you create an account on Gotosocial or Pleroma instance, you might get to stay there, or leave your followers.
I'm very glad to announce the release of version 2.27 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in ANSI C. It includes some interesting new features (that I announced some days ago):
Started Mastodon API support, so you can use Mastodon-compatible apps to access #snac accounts. What works so far: login, private and public timelines, full post information (replies and ancestors), liking and boosting posts. Things that don't work yet but eventually will: following accounts, posting and replying to messages (I still have to figure out how some things work, like posting images), notifications (needs some internal support), the instance timeline (snac does not have one, but it can be simulated with not much effort) and probably many other things. Things that will never work: bookmarks, pinning, a federated timeline, many other things that I don't remember right now. Please note that if you want to use this API in your instance, you must add some lines to your HTTP proxy configuration, see the snac(8) (administrator documentation) manual page. I'm doing my tests using the #Tusky (which sometimes crashes, surely my fault), #AndStatus, #Fedilab and #Husky Android apps. Success or failure reports will be appreciated.
Fixed some buffer overflows (contributed by Saagar Jha).
@boilingsteam#Takahē, an efficient #ActivityPub server implemented in... (checks notes)... #Python? I have to imagine that #Pleroma, written in #RustLang, is a lot more efficient, but maybe it doesn't support handling multiple domains?
What software do people recommend I host if I want to make my own fediverse activity pub server? I was thinking to host pleroma but I would like to get other peoples recommendations.
Aha, nice. I'd personally say there's value to getting more diversity in the kind of apps that are hosted, and then indeed #Pleroma is an option. But also you can consider forks of #Mastodon, such as #Hometown with local-only posting or #Ecko.
If you want to go modern, innovative but still a tad experimental, then #GoToSocial may be a very interesting choice. Bit more experimental still you get to #Bonfire.
Pleromadrama
