Have any #phonetics and specifically vocal production and perception ppl studied the donald duck voice, bc its like a stunning example of perceptual degeneracy with acoustic variability. Those phonemes are nothing like normal speech and are produced totally differently too

It was a long process (more than 2 years since we wrote the preregistration document) but our new study was finally published in yesterday ! The paper itself is rather technical but the central idea is worth sharing in a thread. ⬇️ (1/X)

I take pride in my English language fluency but I was still today's days old when it was finally explained to me that "to sew" is spelled like this (always), and the person that sews is a "sewer".

in english we have a lot of consonants that we don't write down. for example, the rule is

  • "a" when the next word starts with a vowel
  • "an" when it starts with a consonant

I say "an apple" (there's a glottal stop at the beginning of "apple")

So the rule holds, just not when it's written

Don't be afraid of #tones | Language Log, by Victor Mair

So says Stuart Jay Raj, a Thai-based Australian polyglot who speaks several tonal languages. Linked is a half-hour video by him which is #linguistics heavy, but is actually an effort to simplify and systematize how tones work. For example, Raj makes a sharp distinction between #pitch and #tone, something that many people get all mixed up about.

Question for those who know #asl or other forms of #signlanguage, and especially those who are also familiar with #linquistics and #phonetics... presumably there are dialects in sign languages, but are there accents? Shibboleths, localized mannerisms, subtle differences in how far or vigorous motions are made, or how they're combined with other attributes of body language?

Couldn't find any map on languages using contrastive secondary articulations so I made one in R with data from Phoible (Moran, Steven & McCloy, Daniel, 2019; http://phoible.org)
It includes some dialects (for ex. moroccan arabic, egyptian arabic etc.) and in total 507 languages are plotted.
