Time Team Special: Journey To Stonehenge | Classic Special (2005)

“…As they travelled downstream towards Stonehenge, the dead would then be transformed into spirits and pass into the afterlife. The discovery of a curved avenue (the first #neolithic road found in Europe) leading from the henge to the river helps to bear out his own theory - of the spiritual transition from wood and decay to stone and permanence.” #archaeology

A #Neolithic arrowhead made of rock crystal, found in the pile-dwelling settlement in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, dating around 3500 B.C. The raw material was not available in the region, it came from the Alps.

My first pass on Avebury Stone Circle. In my view a more impressive monument than #Stonehenge. An artist friend thought the fleeting clouds contrasted with the permanence of the stones. I’ll take that! #Lino #Linocut #Prehistory #Prehistoric #Neolithic #Henge #Monolith #Wiltshire #Shadow #Stone

Ok folks - #Neolithic Carved Stone Ball idea is turning into a bit of a beautiful crowd sourced experiment!

If you've got a replica & some fine sand: get rolling, twisting, moving.

What patterns do we get?

Please boost.... and add photos of your CSB & the results below.

I'll collate all the ones I get from across the different platforms.

#Neolithic textile production: a charred skein of linen thread, dating around 3200 BC, from the pile dwelling settlement of Nußdorf-Maurach, Überlingen, Lake Constance. The damp environment has preserved it in good condition.

http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/67962

"An astonishing 2,500 beads — flat beads, cylindrical beads, disc beads, tubular shell beads — were ultimately unearthed. Most of them were made of sandstone, but there were also turquoise, shell and amber beads from Lebanon that are the oldest ever discovered."

Neolithic blade-polishing boulder found in Valley of the Stones (www.thehistoryblog.com)

A rare polissoir, a stone used by Neolithic people to sharpen and polish stone axe heads 5,000 years ago, has been discovered in the Valley of Stones National Nature Reserve in Dorset. It is only the second polissoir found undisturbed in situ, known as an “earthfast” stone, in England.

"The Department for Transport approved the £1.7bn two-mile (3.2km) tunnel from Amesbury to Berwick Down in Wiltshire yesterday."

"#Unesco, the UN's heritage body, previously warned that Stonehenge will be placed on its "in danger" list if the tunnel goes ahead, and could lose its status entirely."

Surely £1.7bn is best invested in car infrastructure destroying a #neolithic monument during a raging #ClimateCrisis.

Ravens in Prehistory: Scientists Unearth a 30,000-Year-Old Relationship With Humans
They provide evidence showing that over 30,000 years ago, during the Pavlovian culture, ravens helped themselves to people’s scraps and picked over mammoth carcasses left behind by human hunters. This took place in the region known today as Moravia, in the Czech Republic.

This is a very enigmatic monument and archaeologists suggest that the massive capstone sloped backward from the 2 metre high portal (entry) stones and rested on one or more back stones. There is a difficulty with this interpretation as outward-facing or transverse portal stones are not common in Ireland but do occur in other countries.
The tomb was modified and used as an animal shelter in the late 19th and early 20th century.
